Now I can’t do a post about love for mother earth without my favourite protest song from back in 1997.. Still we have learned nothing! Beds are burning by Midnight Oil. Read about them here

And yet  you love us  still

You are old now and you are tired

Your body raped and parts of you burned and fired.

Yet you love us still.

You are patient with us now even though we treat you ill.

You were young once golden and new

Green and verdant, seas and rivers running blue.

Young then younger than time

Fresh and pristine were you, unlike now choked up , covered in grime.

Yet you love us still.

You are patient with us now even though we treat you ill.

What promise you had though, when brand new

Gracing the heavens green and blue

Before we gouged you out and burnt your soul

Robbed you of the good that made you whole.

Yet you love us still.

You are patient with us even though we treat you ill.

You felt the thaw of ice ages then felt them return

Strange and huge beasts wandered your plains,

You saw  man arrive and you watched his growing pains.

You nursed us gently as we grew.

Sadly, we the ungrateful, turned on you.

Yet you love us still.

You are patient with us now even though we treat you ill.

How beautiful fresh and new were you

When only beasts roamed and flowers grew

When storms were all that raged

Man had not yet started his cruel selfish rampage.

You were fresh and had such great things to do.

Now we have dragged all that is good from you.

We have laid you waste, you can no longer start anew.

Sadly we have pushed you toward your end ,

We were selfish we stole we did not bend.

We took from you and did not replace ,

We have fought wars across your body and we have scared your face.

M.M.M.M. Happy Birthday. Then and Now.

This week’s challenge is to build your song picks around April-born singers, songwriters, or musicians.. I like this and decided to do a little twist on the prompt. I picked four artists and did a now and then . Happy Birthday Month to Peter Frampton, Susan Boyle,Janis Ian and John Oates.

First up the gorgeous :Peter Kenneth Frampton (born 22 April 1950) is an English-American guitarist, singer and songwriter who rose to prominence as a member of the rock bands the Herd and Humble Pie. Later in his career Frampton found significant success as a solo artist. He has released several albums, including his breakthrough album, the live recording Frampton Comes Alive! (1976), which spawned several hit singles and has earned 8× Platinum by the RIAA in the United States.^[3] He has also worked with various other acts such as Ringo Starr, the Who‘s John Entwistle, David Bowie, and both Matt Cameron and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam and Joe Bonamassa. Susan Magdalane Boyle (born 1 April 1961) is a Scottish singer. She rose to fame in 2009 after appearing as a contestant on the third series of Britain’s Got Talent, singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables. As of 2021, Boyle has sold 25 million records. Her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream (2009), is one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century, having sold over 10 million copies worldwide, and it was the best-selling album internationally in 2009. In 2011, Boyle made UK music history by becoming the first female artist to achieve three successive albums debut at No.1 in less than two years. In 2012, Susan was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Susan had a minor stroke in 2022. She revealed the news during an appearance on June 4, 2023, after her performance on Britain’s Got Talent. More information here

Janis Ian (born Janis Eddy Fink; April 7, 1951) is an American singer-songwriter who was most commercially successful in the 1960s and 1970s. Her signature songs are the 1966/67 hit “Society’s Child (Baby I’ve Been Thinking)” and the 1975 Top Ten single “At Seventeen“, from her seventh studio album Between the Lines, which in September 1975 reached no. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. John William Oates (born April 7, 1948) is an American musician, best known as half of the rock and soul duo Hall & Oates along with Daryl Hall. He has played rock, R&B, and soul music, serving as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer.

Although Oates’s main role in the duo is being the guitarist, he also co-wrote many of the top 10 songs that they recorded, including: “Sara Smile” (referring to Hall’s then-girlfriend, Sara Allen), “She’s Gone“, and “Out of Touch“, as well as “You Make My Dreams“, “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)“, “Maneater“, and “Adult Education“. He also sang lead vocals on several more singles in the Hot 100, such as “How Does It Feel to Be Back“, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” (a remake of the 1965 song performed by the Righteous Brothers), and “Possession Obsession“. In 1986, Oates contributed the song “(She’s the) Shape of Things to Come” on the soundtrack to the 1986 film About Last Night. He also co-wrote and sang backup on the song “Electric Blue“, recorded by the Australian band Icehouse, which was a Billboard top 10 hit.

Oates was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004, and in 2014 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of Hall & Oates. His memoir, Change of Seasons, was published in 2017.

In November 2023, Daryl Hall sued John Oates and filed a temporary restraining order against him, for initially undisclosed reasons. The following week, Hall filed a declaration accusing Oates of “the ultimate partnership betrayal” for planning to sell his share of the duo’s publishing to Primary Wave Music. Oates responded that Hall’s statements were “inflammatory, outlandish, and inaccurate”. More information here
