#TANKA TUESDAY #POETRY CHALLENGE NO. 211, #Abhanga, or #PoetsChoice

Hi its Tuesday and time for Colleen’s Tuesday Tanka Challenge. It is the first Challenge of the month so it is poets choice, so we can pick any form of poetry we fancy. Colleen has found us yet another form of poetry called an Abhanga. I have chosen to try the new form as I love a challenge. I chose also to write two stanzas. Below is how it works.

Abhanga, “the completion” is a stanzaic form commonly used for devotional poetic composition, although it has also been used for cynicism, satire and reflective moods. It was popular from the 13th thru 17th centuries Marathi Region of India and is described as complex and classic. (poetrymagnumopus.com)

The elements of the Abhanga are:

  • stanzaic, written in any number of 4 line stanzas.
  • syllabic, 6-6-6-4 syllables each
  • rhymed L2 and L3 rhyme. Often internal rhyme is employed. End rhyme scheme x a a x , x being unrhymed.

New Soul

Watch out my darling, watch where you are, on the edge of the highest cliff surrounded completely  by the stars.

Mind where you put your feet now, be careful where you tread. These cliffs are prone to crumbling and if you fall from here you will be dead.

I love the dress my darling the midnight shade of blue. It makes it very hard to see which is sky and which is you.

You have a glow about you tonight it emanates from your eyes. They have that wicked twinkle to match the myriad stars in the skies.

Tread carefully my darling do watch where you go there is ice under foot and it looks like snow. The rocks are already crumbling they fall like April rain  take care my love for if you fall you will not get up again.

Please come to me my darling, my newly escaped soul your not long back from the heaven so I like you stay whole. This place is not safe for either of us I hate to have to say that neither of us can fly and if anybody tells you different, my darling they just lie.

JusJoJan: Play for the Devil

Play for me, said he
Play for me well and I will set you free.

Tired was she of forever practicing scales
Tired was she of the crowd and their appreciative hails.
Tired was she of forever moving on to the next town.
Tired was she of having no roots, and never settling down.

Play for me, said he
Play for me well and I will set you free

Stunningly beautiful was she,
The top of her profession she was set to be.
Acclaimed and always the star of the show
The world at her feet up was the way she would go.

Play for me, said he
Play for me well and I will set you free.

Tempted, tempted was she
By dark cloaked figure who promised to set her free.
What would you want as payment she demanded to know
What would it cost to rest, from her shoulder’s this mantle to throw.

Play for me, said he
Play for me well and I will set you free.

What is your freedom worth to me
Let me think this over very carefully.
A moments silence then he said with a sneer.
Your talent young lady your nimble fingers my dear.

Play for me, said he
Play for well and I will set you free

Closing her eyes she thought for a while
The idea of freedom filled her head and made her smile.
I shall do it, I shall do it cried she
For she longed to be normal, she longed to be free.

Play for me, said he
Play for me well and I will set you free.

Fine he said as he took her violin and her bow.
He touched her hands and head then he bid her to go.
Of a sudden she was fearful, yet why she did not know.

Play for me, said he
Play for me well and l will set you free

I can’t, I can’t cried she
What have you done, what have you done to me.
Nothing that you did not ask me to do
Beware what you wish for, in case it comes true.
