Throwback Thursday #43 – Sensory Memories

Maggie said: “Welcome back to Throwback Thursday. Perhaps there is no stronger memory trigger than a sensory experience. Those are the things we hear, sense, or smell, that take us back to aother place and time. “

This challenge is the brainchild of Lauren and Maggie

So here we go down the rabbit hole?

Do certain smells bring back memories for you? Maybe a flower, or a perfume, or the smell of a certain food cooking? If so, can you share one such memory?

I could share many of all different smells but the best are of Mum’s cooking: Hot cross buns for Easter, cinnamon and dough. Mince pies and sausage rolls Christmas, roast meat and veg Sundays. No smell at all…it had to be Wimbledon fortnight during those weeks Mum was on strike, she loved the tennis so it was salade every day!

Have you ever sensed a strong smell that reminded you of someone only to realize the smell was not actually present? How do you explain that?

Tobacco, Dad smoked a pipe it was constantly in his mouth when ever I smell tobacco I think of Dad…I have often smelled that smell for no apparent reason.

Share a YouTube video, or name the song and tell us about the memory. What song immediately whisks you back to another place and time?

Kate Bush Deal with God always takes me back to 1985 when I bought The Hounds of Love album. Takes me back to being a mum of three boys with a husband on a flying squad who I rarely saw. It kept me going…so did every track but especially Deal with God… Even the video with Kate Bush chaseing after Michael Hervieu was how I felt, chasing an ever absent husband, chasing children, chasing life! Now thanks to Netflix and Stranger Things it’s bigger than ever.!

Is there a taste that reminds you of a person, place or memory? Does that food happen to be one of your ‘comfort foods’?

Summer pudding made with stale bread and fruit always reminds me of mum.
Also treacle pudding and custard the first pudding I made hubby we both love it but rarely have it now.

Have you ever been somewhere new and immediately felt at home as if you have been there before?

Yes often… I believe I may of been there in a former life.

Have you ever experienced déjà vu? If so, how do you explain it?

All the time I explained what I think above.

Are there sounds that remind you of another place and time? (Something like a clock ticking, a train whistle, a horse galloping, gentle rain, etc.)

The whistle of a steam train takes me back to my childhood holidays. Dad and Mum never could afford a car so the whole family travelled by train! So the woosh of steam from between the wheels of a train or its whistle and I am back as a tiny girl being lead by the had of an older brother or sister off to the seaside!

Do certain textures or colors trigger memories?

No not really. Though I always think of Nuns when I see long black cloaks..not good memories.

Do certain stories, books, or poems remind you of someone from your past?

Fairy tales by The Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen, remind me of Dad and my three sisters they always read to me….my brother’s didn’t!

What sensory stimuli surrounding you and your present environment do you think might evoke memories of you for your family or friends?

That’s a hard one, the boys should possibly be triggered by my music, Queen, Imogen Heap, Kate Bush, the grandsons sandwiches with lettuce in, chocolate and huge hugs 🤣🤣💜💜
Friends? my purfume Paloma Picassa.

Song Lyric Sunday. An Olfactory trip.

Jim Adams

December 27, 2020 and our host Jim Adams has given us the prompt Odor/ Scent/ Smell/ Taste. For Song Lyric Sunday.

So my first thought was Little Bird Imogen Heap. It contains the line “We smell rats in the kitchen.”

Ellipse is the third studio album from British singer-songwriter Imogen Heap. After returning from a round the world writing trip, Heap completed the album at her childhood home in Essex, converting her old playroom in the basement into a studio. The album got its name from the distinctive elliptical shape of the house. The album’s title was confirmed by Heap via her Twitter page on 25 April 2009, after being leaked onto the internet on 23 April. On 15 June, Heap confirmed that the album would be released on 24 August 2009 in the United Kingdom on Megaphonic Records and 25 August in North America on RCA Records and Epic Records and distributed by Sony BMG. Subject matter in the songs includes post break-up malaise (“Wait It Out”), domestic boredom (“Little Bird”), body image issues (“Bad Body Double”) and a common Heap theme, unrequited love (“Swoon” and “Half Life”). On 17 August 2009 Heap made the album available for live streaming via her webpage. The album can no longer be streamed via her webpage but was moved to SoundCloud.

A taste of honey by the Beatles.

A Taste of Honey” is a pop standard written by Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow. It was originally an instrumental track (or recurring theme) written for the 1960 Broadway version of the 1958 British play A Taste of Honey (which was also made into the film of the same name in 1961). Both the original and a later recording by Herb Alpert in 1965 earned the song four Grammy Awards. A vocal version of the song—first recorded by Billy Dee Williams (and released in 1961 on the Prestige label), and then recorded very successfully by Lenny Welch in the summer of 1962—was also recorded by the Beatles for their first album in 1963. Barbra Streisand performed the song as part of her cabaret act during 1962, and recorded it in January 1963 for her debut album The Barbra Streisand Album on Columbia, which won a Grammy for Album of the Year (1963).

Labryth by Elisa. Scent.

Labyrinth” is a song by Italian star Elisa and was released as the second single from her debut album Pipes & Flowers in 1997. The single was published in CD format in Italy, but was published as a 12″ vinyl, which contained different versions of the song and the previous single, “Sleeping in Your Hand“. The song made its debut on the radio in the second half of 1997 and two promos were published, one of which, like the vinyl, contained alternative versions of the song, produced by the duo Urbanatribù. The single was released in two different versions in Germany and the Netherlands. There was also a promo released in France and a promotional EP released in Germany, Nethlands and Denmark.

Josephine Ron Wood. Odor

Ronald David Wood (born 1 June 1947)[1] is an English rock musician, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, artist, author and radio personality best known as a member of the Rolling Stones since 1975, as well as a member of Faces and the Jeff Beck Group.

Wood began his career in 1964, when he joined the Birds (not to be confused with the American band the Byrds) on guitar. He then joined the mod group the Creation, but remained with the group only for a short time and appeared on only a few of their singles. He joined the Jeff Beck Group in 1967 as a bass player. Their two albums, Truth and Beck-Ola, are both highly praised.

The group split in 1969, and Wood departed along with lead vocalist Rod Stewart to join former Small Faces members Ronnie LaneIan McLagan and Kenney Jones in a new group named Faces. The group found great success in the UK and mainland Europe, though achieved only cult status in the US. Wood sang and co-wrote the popular title track from their final LP, Ooh La La, released in 1973.

As the group began to split he began several solo projects, eventually recording his first solo LP, I’ve Got My Own Album to Do, in 1974. The album featured bandmate McLagan as well as former Beatle George Harrison and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, a longtime friend of Wood. After the departure of Mick Taylor from the Stones, Richards soon invited Wood to join them; he did so in 1975, but was not officially inducted as a member until bassist Bill Wyman‘s departure in 1993.

Besides I’ve Got My Own Album to Do, Wood has recorded several other solo efforts. Now Look was released in 1975, and peaked at No. 118 on Billboard; he also collaborated with Ronnie Lane for the soundtrack album Mahoney’s Last Stand. Wood also released Gimme Some Neck in 1979, which hit No. 45 in the US; 1234 was released in 1981, peaking at No. 164. He released Slide on This in 1992, Not for Beginners came out in 2002 and I Feel Like Playing in 2010. As a member of the Rolling Stones, Wood was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and was inducted a second time, as a member of Faces, in April 2012.

Lyrics

A fairytale, a storybook romance
Our eyes met and we began to dance
I saw a beach, I could hear the shore,
When all the time I’m in a Woolworth store.Jo, Josephine, I make her hum, she makes me sing
Jo, Josephine, I make her moan, she makes me scream With just one touch, she makes the hardest ‘wood’ soft,
My baby turns me on not off,
Sometimes, sometimes when you bring me down
Still I like having you around.Jo, Josephine, I make her hum, she makes me sing,
Jo, Josephine, I make you moan, you make me scream. When I’m lost, I can’t find her anywhere
I turn up my nose to sniff the air,
Odor so sweet, I know that she’s there.I don’t need to run, I don’t need to hide,
My Jo never leaves my side
Don’t need no headache from no one night stand
I’d rather use my baby’s right hand.Jo, Josephine, you make me moan, you make me scream
Jo, Josephine, I make her hum she makes me sing
Jo, Josephine, I’m the king, and your my queen,
Jo, Josephine, she’s my love, you know what I mean. When I’m lost, I can’t find her anywhere
I turn up my nose to sniff the air,
Odor so sweet, I know that she’s there.Jo, Josephine. . .
Jo, come talk to me
Jo, what was that you said,
Jo, come talk to me. . .Source: MusixmatchSongwriters: R. Wood / B.fowler

Happy Sunday Everyone.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday. Smell

This week  for SoCs I have decided to go with three Haiku that I hope are evocative of smell. Our leader LindaGHill of Life in Progress said : Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “smell.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

There’s nothing so sweet

As the smell of the new born

Makes your life complete.
