Song Lyric Sunday, Smart/Stupid.

Jim Adams

This week for Song Lyric Sunday Jim Adams our host has given us the prompt Smart/ Stupid.

The first song that came to mind was Stupid by Tate McRae. It’s a great song by a very talented young lady.

Tatum Rosner “Tate” McRae (born July 1, 2003) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and dancer. At the age of thirteen, she gained prominence as the first Canadian finalist on the American reality TV show So You Think You Can Dance. McRae caught the attention of RCA Records in 2019 after her original song “One Day” (2017) went viral on YouTube, subsequently releasing her debut EP, All the Things I Never Said, in January 2020.

Shortly after McRae began dancing competitively, she was awarded Best Female Dancer in the “Mini” category at the 2013 Dance Awards in New York City. After gaining some prominence, she became a brand ambassador for the American dance manufacturer Capezio. She became a finalist at the New York City Dance Alliance’s 2014 National Gala.

In 2015, McRae was awarded a two week scholarship at the Berlin State Ballet company after winning the silver medal at the 2015 Youth America Grand Prix. She danced in the music video for Walk off the Earth‘s platinum-certified single “Rule The World“. For the second time, McRae was awarded her Best Female Dancer award at the 2015 Dance Awards, this time in the “Junior” category.[16] McRae had been a consistently active voice actress for the Lalaloopsy franchise, voicing the part of “Spot Splatter Splash” since the show’s inception in 2013.

In April 2016, McRae performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show as part of the DancerPalooza troupe. She performed again in October 2016 as part of the Jump Dance Convention troupe. She also performed with Justin Bieber as part of his Purpose World Tour in June 2016, before taking part in the thirteenth season of American television show So You Think You Can Dance. While competing for the America’s Favorite Dancer title as a non-American, she was mentored by American dancer and actress Kathryn McCormick. She advanced further in the competition than any other Canadian in the show’s history, placing third on the final episode.Canadian TV host Murtz Jaffer from Toronto Sun reacted, “The fact that Canadians couldn’t vote for Tate makes her third-place finish all the more impressive. While she might not have been voted America’s favourite dancer, she certainly might be Canada’s.” She performed at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards as a finalist from the SYTYCD cast. For the third time, she won Best Female Dancer at the 2018 Dance Awards in Las Vegas, this time in the “Teen” category. More information here.

Then I thought of the wonderful Harry Belafonte and Man smart, Woman smarter.

Man Smart (Woman Smarter)” is a calypso song variously credited as being composed by Norman Span (King Radio), D. L. Miller, F. Kuhn, and Charles Harris.[1][2][3][4] Span’s authorship seems most likely since, as a popular calypso musician and songwriter, he first recorded the song in 1936, and none of the other ascribed composers are associated with calypso.[5] Miller’s music industry career began around 1950.

Artists from many genres, including Joan BaezHarry Belafontethe CarpentersRosanne CashChubby Checker,[6] Dr VictorRobert Palmer, and Ratdog, have recorded the song. It was a staple of the live repertoire of the Grateful Dead from 1981 to 1995.Belafonte’s first of three recordings of the song was included on his best-selling album Calypso, which reached number one on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart in 1956, and remained on the chart for 31 weeks. Span is credited as the song’s composer on Belafonte’s albums. It is sung by Desi ArnazLucille BallWilliam Frawley and Vivian Vance in the 1957 episode of I Love Lucy entitled “Ragtime Band”. A brief clip of a recording of Homer and Marge Simpson singing it was also shown in The Simpsons‘ 1991 episode Treehouse of Horror II as well.

“Man Smart (Woman Smarter)”

I say let us put man and a woman together
To find out which one is smarter
Some say man but I say no
The woman got the man de day should know

And not me but the people they say
That de man are leading de women astray
But I say, that the women of today
Smarter than the man in every way
That’s right de woman is uh smarter
That’s right de woman is uh smarter
That’s right de woman is uh smarter, that’s right, that’s right

Ever since the world began
Woman was always teaching man
And I you listen to my bid attentively
I goin’ tell you how she smarter than me

Samson was the strongest man long ago
No one could a beat him, as we all know
Until he clash with Deliah on top of the bed
She told them all the strength was in the hair of his head

You meet a girl at a pretty dance
Thinking that you would stand a chance
Take her home, thinking she’s alone
Open de door you find her husband home

I was treating a girl independently
She was making baby for me
When de baby born and I went to see
Eyes was blue it was not by me

Garden of Eden was very nice
Adam never work in Paradise
Eve meet snake, Paradise gone
She make Adam work from that day on

Methusaleh spent all his life in tears
Lived without a woman for 900 years
One day he decided to have some fun
The poor man never lived to see 900 and one

This is part of Jim Adams Song Lyric Sunday.

Song Lyric Sunday. Opposite.

Hi everyone it’s Sunday again and time for Song Lyric Sunday. This week our host Jim Adams has aske we use opposite as our prompt.

This prompt was suggested by Maggie From Cave Walls and she said that she will be showing up “with the proverbial bells on – in contrasting colors of course!”

I have gone with the first two songs about opposite that immediately cane to mind. First the Beatles with Hello Goodbye, then Sk8ter Boi by Avril Lavigne.

Hello, Goodbye” is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney. Backed by John Lennon‘s “I Am the Walrus“, it was issued as a non-album single in November 1967, the group’s first release since the death of their manager, Brian Epstein. The single was commercially successful around the world, topping charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, Australia and several other countries. McCartney later said that the lyrics take duality as their theme. The song originated when, in response to a question from Beatles aide Alistair Taylor about songwriting, McCartney sat down at a harmonium and asked Taylor to say the opposite of whatever he said. The completed song includes a musical coda, which was improvised by the Beatles when they were recording the track in October 1967. Unimpressed with the composition, Lennon pushed for “I Am the Walrus” to be the single’s A-side, before reluctantly accepting that “Hello, Goodbye” was the more commercial-sounding of the two sides. The Beatles produced three promotional films for the song, one of which was shown on The Ed Sullivan Show in America. Due to the regulations against lip-syncing on British television, none of the clips were aired there. More information here

Sk8er Boi” (pronounced “skater boy”) is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne, released as the second single from her debut album, Let Go (2002). It was written by Lavigne and The Matrix (Scott Spock, Lauren Christy, and Graham Edwards), and produced by The Matrix. The song is a power pop and pop punk track, which lyrically tells a story told from the singer’s viewpoint about her rocker boyfriend and a girl he knew in high school who rejected him because he was a skateboarder and she was a snob. The song was well-received by critics, with most commending its hook, calling the song “funny” and “clever”. It also received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the 2003 edition. Commercially, “Sk8er Boi” was a success, reaching the top-ten in more than ten countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States (becoming Lavigne’s second top ten single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart) and sold over 1.8 million copies worldwide. According to Spin, “Sk8er Boi” has the 5th best pop-punk chorus of the 21st century. More information here

Song Lyric Sunday. Self isolation party.

It’s time again for Jim Adams to host Song Lyric Sunday this week our prompt is

Alone/Confined/Depressed/Isolated/Restless/Solo

Alone, well it’s got to be alone again by Gilbert O’Sullivan.

Gilbert O’Sullivan (born Raymond Edward O’Sullivan; 1 December 1946) is an Irish singer songwriter, best known for his early 1970s hits “Alone Again (Naturally)“, “Clair“, and “Get Down“.

Worldwide he has charted 16 top-40 records, including six No. 1 songs, the first of which was 1970’s “Nothing Rhymed“. Across his career, he has recorded 19 studio albums, up to his UK top 20 self-titled record in 2018. Speaking in 2009 he said, “I write pop songs. That’s all I want to do. I have no interest in just touring, and living in the past.” The music magazine Record Mirror voted him the top UK male singer of 1972.[3] He has received three Ivor Novello Awards, including “Songwriter of the Year” in 1973. Information from Wiki

Warren William Zevon (/ˈziːvɒn/; January 24, 1947 – September 7, 2003)was an American rock singer-songwriter and musician.

Zevon’s most famous compositions include “Werewolves of London“, “Lawyers, Guns and Money“, and “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner“, all of which are featured on his third album, Excitable Boy (1978), whose title track is also well-known. He also wrote major hits that were recorded by other artists, including “Poor Poor Pitiful Me“, “Accidentally Like a Martyr”, “Mohammed’s Radio“, “Carmelita“, and “Hasten Down the Wind“. Along with his own work, he recorded or performed occasional covers, including Allen Toussaint‘s “A Certain Girl”, Bob Dylan‘s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door“, Leonard Cohen‘s “First We Take Manhattan“, Steve Winwood‘s “Back in the High Life Again“, and Prince‘s “Raspberry Beret“.

Zevon’s early music industry successes were found as a session musician, jingle composer, songwriter, touring musician, musical coordinator & bandleader. Despite all this, Zevon struggled to break through in his solo career, until his music was performed by Linda Ronstadt, beginning in 1976 with her album Hasten Down the Wind. This launched a cult following that lasted for 25 years, with Zevon making occasional returns to album and single charts until his death from cancer in 2003. He briefly found a new audience in the 1980s by teaming up with members of R.E.M. in the blues rock outfit Hindu Love Gods.

Known for his dry wit and acerbic lyrics, he was a guest numerous times on Late Night with David Letterman and the Late Show with David Letterman.

“Splendid Isolation”

I want to live alone in the desert
I want to be like Georgia O’Keefe
I want to live on the Upper East Side
And never go down in the street

Splendid Isolation
I don’t need no one
Splendid Isolation

Michael Jackson in Disneyland
Don’t have to share it with nobody else
Lock the gates, Goofy, take my hand
And lead me through the World of Self

Splendid Isolation
I don’t need no one
Splendid Isolation

Don’t want to wake up with no one beside me
Don’t want to take up with nobody new
Don’t want nobody coming by without calling first
Don’t want nothing to do with you

I’m putting tinfoil up on the windows
Lying down in the dark to dream
I don’t want to see their faces
I don’t want to hear them scream

Splendid Isolationa
I don’t need no one
Splendid Isolation

Splendid Isolation
I don’t need no one
Splendid Isolation

Lyrics from AtoZ lyrics

Mother’s little helper by the Rolling Stones says it all about depression! I also think this particularly relevant to the situation with , young mum’s, middle age mum’s and older mum’s being in caught in 24/7 proximity with their children. Having to entertain, school and look after them. Not so bad if you have a big house and garden, and internet and TVs and a partner, that can be bad enough but in a tiny flat with no garden it must be so hard.

Mother’s Little Helper” is a song by the English rock band the Rolling Stones. It first appeared as the opening track to the United Kingdom version of their 1966 album Aftermath. It was released as a single in the United States and peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1966. The song deals with the sudden popularity of prescribed calming drugs among housewives, and the potential hazards of overdose or addiction. The drug in question is variously assumed to be meprobamate (Miltown) or diazepam (Valium).

“Mother’s Little Helper”

What a drag it is getting old

“Kids are different today”
I hear ev’ry mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though she’s not really ill
There’s a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mother’s little helper
And it helps her on her way
Gets her through her busy day

“Things are different today”
I hear ev’ry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husband’s just a drag
So she buys an instant cake
And she burns a frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mother’s little helper
And two help her on her way
Get her through her busy day

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old

“Men just aren’t the same today”
I hear ev’ry mother say
They just don’t appreciate that you get tired
They’re so hard to satisfy
You could tranquilize your mind
So go running for the shelter of a mother’s little helper
And for help you through the night
Help to minimize your plight

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old

“Life’s just much too hard today”
I hear ev’ry mother say
The pursuit of happiness just seems a bore
And if you take more of those
You will get an overdose
No more running for the shelter of a mother’s little helper
They just helped you on your way
Through your busy dying day

Hey!

Lyrics from AtoZ Lyrics

Matt Hires (born August 5, 1985) is an American singer-songwriter from Tampa, Florida. Drawing inspiration from influences as disparate as The BandSufjan StevensWilco and Ryan Adams,[1] Matt became the first artist to sign with F-Stop Music, an imprint of Atlantic Records.

Information from Wiki

Here is a real cute song to Bop to in your isolation! Solo by Clean Bandit, Demi Lovato. I especially like this because it an English group that sound like a Latino group.

Solo” is a song by British electronic music band Clean Bandit, featuring guest vocals from American singer Demi Lovato and pitched backing vocals from Kamille. It was written by Lovato, Kamille, Grace ChattoFred Gibson and Jack Patterson, and was produced by Chatto, Gibson, Patterson and Mark Ralph. The song was released on 18 May 2018 by Atlantic Records.

Finally Confined. I chose Chains by Carole King.

Carole King (born Carol Joan Klein, February 9, 1942) is an American singer-songwriter who has been active since 1958, initially as one of the staff songwriters at the Brill Building and later as a solo artist. She is the most successful female songwriter of the latter half of the 20th century in the US, having written or co-written 118 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100. King also wrote 61 hits that charted in the UK, making her the most successful female songwriter on the UK singles charts between 1952 and 2005.

So there we go we made by a party out of self isolation.

Song Lyric Sunday. 14/06/19.

Jim Adams said : This the theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is Haunted/Magic/Mystery/Supernatural/Trick .

I have chosen In The Shadows by Rasmus.

The Rasmus is a Finnish rock band that formed in 1994 in Helsinki while the band members were in upper comprehensive school. The original band members were Lauri Ylönen (lead singer/songwriter), Eero Heinonen (bass), Pauli Rantasalmi (guitar) and Jarno Lahti (drums). Jarno Lahti left the year after and was replaced by Janne Heiskanen in 1995. Heiskanen quit the band in 1998 and was soon replaced by Aki Hakala. The Rasmus has sold 5 million albums worldwide, 310,000 copies in their native Finland alone. They have won numerous awards, both domestic and international. More information here

The song In The Shadows is very spooky as were both of the videos the made for the song. Which is why I have enclosed both videos.

It is on the group’s fifth studio album Dead Letters. The single achieved considerable chart success throughout Europe and worldwide, including the United Kingdom, where it reached No. 3, and New Zealand, where it topped the chart.

Here is the version for the American market.

And below is the official video for Scandinavia, UK and the rest of the rest of the world both were available and popular.

I always thought Rasmus a great group. Here are the lyrics. Happy Sunday everyone.

In The Shadows”

No sleep
No sleep until I am done with finding the answer
Won’t stop
Won’t stop before I find a cure for this cancer
Sometimes
I feel like going down and so disconnected
Somehow
I know that I am haunted to be wanted

I’ve been watching
I’ve been waiting
In the shadows for my time
I’ve been searching
I’ve been living
For tomorrows all my life

In the shadows

In the shadows

They say
That I must learn to kill before I can feel safe
But I
I’d rather kill myself than turn into their slave
Sometimes
I feel that I should go and play with the thunder
Somehow
I just don’t wanna stay and wait for a wonder

I’ve been watching
I’ve been waiting
In the shadows for my time
I’ve been searching
I’ve been living
For tomorrows all my life

Lately I been walking walking in circles, watching waiting for something
Feel me touch me heal me, come take me higher

I’ve been watching
I’ve been waiting
In the shadows all my time
I’ve been searching
I’ve been living
For tomorrows all my life
I’ve been watching
I’ve been waiting
I’ve been searching
I’ve been living for tomorrows

In the shadows

In the shadows
I’ve been waiting

Song lyric Sunday. 3/3/19.

This week Jim Adams at NewEpicAuthor told us he had heard from Helen Vahdati. Unfortunately Helen is still unwell and has decided not to take the reins back.

Song Lyric Sunday banner

Luckily for us Jim is happy to continue hosting our weekly song prompt. Hooray and thank you Jim.

Rules and Pingback

The prompt for this week is “Occupation”.

Well there are so many and I have had a really hard job on deciding what to pick .

Before I go for my main choice here is my favourite occupation song of all time. Wichita Lineman . By Glen Campbell. A beautiful self explanatory song about a man doing a dangerous job in harsh conditions and missing home and partner.

Lyrics and who wrote the song all in the video.

Well now here is my main choice The Scientist by Cold play. The video shows the story of the song backwards. Chris Martin had to sing “The Scientist” backwards for the music video, so learned the phonetic movements which made it look like he was singing the words, the singer set about the month long task of studying his lyrics and learning how perform them back to front. It is very well done!

The Scientist”

Come up to meet you, tell you I’m sorry
You don’t know how lovely you are

I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart

Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh, let’s go back to the start

Running in circles
Coming up tails
Heads on a science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It’s such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard

Oh, take me back to the start

I was just guessing
At numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart

Questions of science
Science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh, and I rush to the start

Running in circles
Chasing our tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it’s such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard

I’m going back to the start

Oh [x4]

Song Lyric Sunday: Season.

It’s Christmas Eve tomorrow. Don’t panic! By the way I have had three attempts at this blog fingers crossed I have nailed it this time 😉

Helen Vahdati who hosts #SLS has given us the prompt Season for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday.

Well I thought maybe I could do all the seasons, starting with Spring.

Let’s go with Donna Summer and Spring Affair.

Ooh, something’s coming over me
Ooh, I think it’s got a hold on me, it’s got me, it’s got me
Ooh, just the man I hoped you’d be
Ooh, just the man to set me free, you got me, you got me
You got me, you got me
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And I’m hung on you
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And we’ve got something new, me and you, oh baby
Ooh, guess I’m falling much too fast
Ooh, I hope this love is gonna last, I’ve fallen
Ooh, the feeling’s getting really strong
Ooh, gives me strength to carry on, I’ve fallen, I’ve fallen
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And I’m hung up on you
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And we’ve got something new
It’s a spring affair
It’s a spring affair
Oooh, ooh, ooh
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And I’m hung up on you
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And we’ve got something new
Uuuh uhh aah,.. oh yeah…
Ooh, you’re the sunshine in my life
Ooh, how you come on shining bright, you got me
Ooh, feeling’s gonna grow and grow
Ooh, let your loving river flow, you got me, you got all of me
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And I’m hung up on you
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And we’ve got something new
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And we’ve got something new
It’s a spring affair
It’s a spring affair
Spring affair
Give strength to carry on
Spring affair…

Lyric from A to Z Lyrics.

Next Summer, Here are The Corrs with Summer Sunshine I do love the Corrs their blend of traditional Irish music and modern make for a fantastic repertoire. This song falls into the modern section.

Autumn next and the fabulous Kinks with Autumn Almanac. The two brothers Ray and Dave Davis were brilliant songwriters and musicians….still are.

Now finally Winter. There are many but it has got to be Freddie in the Winter of his life. With Queen and A Winter’s Tale. Just beautiful, just perfect.

“A Winter’s Tale”

It’s winter-fall
Red skies are gleaming
Sea-gulls are flying over
Swans are floatin’ by
Smoking chimney-tops

Am I dreaming?
Am I dreaming?

The nights draw in
There’s a silky moon up in the sky
Children are fantasising
Grown-ups are standin’ by
What a super feeling

Am I dreaming?
Am I dreaming?

(Dreaming)
So quiet and peaceful
Tranquil and blissful
There’s a kind of magic in the air
What a truly magnificent view
A breathtaking scene

With the dreams of the world
In the palm of your hand

(Dreaming)
A cosy fireside chat
A little this, a little that
Sound of merry laughter skippin’ by
Gentle rain beatin’ on my face
What an extraordinary place!

And the dream of the child
Is the hope of the—hope of the man

It’s all so beautiful
Like a landscape painting in the sky
Mountains are zoomin’ higher
Little girls scream and cry

My world is spinnin’ and spinnin’ and spinnin’
It’s unbelievable
Sends me reeling

Am I dreaming?
Am I dreaming?
Ooh, it’s bliss

Lyrics from AtoZ lyrics
