Colleen said ‘This week’s challenge is a photo prompt. I’ve asked my friend, and photographer, Terri Webster Schrandt, from secondwindleisure.com to share her photos with us for inspiration. Terri runs a weekly photo challenge called Sunday Stills. Check it out HERE.”
Terri says: “This is a filtered version of a rose I photographed at the International Rose Test Garden in Portland.”
I have chosen to write an Abhanga in any number of 4-line stanzas with 6-6-6-4 syllables each. L2 and L3 rhyme. The end rhyme scheme is abbc. It is customary to title your poetry.
Nature’s Circle.
Past her best, beauty fades Edging her petals dark Still her presence to mark Her colour glows
Radiant in her youth She still outshines them all Her green leaves and stalk tall She bows her head
Nature has run it’s course She will whither and die Her scent through air will fly It’s nature’s way.
From the soil she has grown Nutured her and nurished Through summer she flourished. Life’s sweet circle
Gaia has given up her fruits and we gladly harvest them. Like that first harvest it can be a life saver as days grow colder. Let us all come together as one to thank Mother Earth.
Why did we not say more, why did we not do more, to help. We sorted the rubbish, measured the water, unplugged plugs. Unfortunately time ran out, there’s no point to regret our planets demise.
Standing on the edge of tomorrow bathed in nights silver He felt regret, he was alone, she would be here soon all golden and fresh faced. She approached he ran, unable to deny his nature.
Hello everyone. Colleen said “This week, let’s have fun with the colour of March: GREEN!
Green is one of those colours that includes many shades. This colour also has different meanings not associated with the color.
This week’s challenge is to choose your own syllabic form and a shade of green to feature in your syllabic poem. You’ll receive bonus points if you don’t use the name: green. You’ll also receive bonus points if you can also incorporate a different meaning for the word green in your poem.
I have decided to do a Haiku using new apprentice, meaning green, no experience. Verdant meaning, lush and green, and Viridesence meaning greenish or becoming green.
Death sat alone in an empty pub, everywhere he went this happened, he’d come in everyone else would leave. Such a shame he thought sipping his pint and watching it drip right through to the carpet….. so embarrassing!
The door flew open with an almighty gust of wind blowing in dust and tumble weed, very unusual for Brixton. Three hooded and cloaked figures entered “Hey man this is a step up from that coffee bar we met in last time” shouted Plague as he sat down and picked up the lager death had ordered for him on the pub app. “How have you been ” asked Death.
“Actually I have been so busy, as busy as you mate, yup it’s been a great couple of years! “
Famine sat down to his Guinness, the food on his plate turn to mush as he breathed on it. “Cheers Death I’m starving and parched.”.
Death nodded as War came in the sound of fighting and gunshot could be heard from the street, hi big man I’ve been busy too handy with Plague here, grabbing all the headlines I can do loads of damage.
Death moved his sythe and war jumped up waiving an AK-47 at him, Death gave him a withering look and said, “Don’t threaten me, you’ll only come off worse! ” War sat down.
“Tell me” asked Famine whose poked Mother Nature she’s in a foul mood, floods, fires, earthquakes, record hurricanes and tornadoes, not to mention climate change. Is she joining us today. ”
“No” Death replied “She’s too busy fighting back, sick of these humans leaching off of her. She sent you her regards Plague and says you’re doing a great job.”
The unfortunate barman came across to the table when Death beckoned to him, “Another round young man and packet of crisps for my friend Famine here! “
The barman, was all at once exhausted, ready for a fight, starving and showing all the main symptoms for covid, returned to the bar and poured these oddly unquieting customers their drinks. As he came back he tripped on Famine’s shopping nearly spilling the drinks. ” Mind the toilet rolls ” Famine snapped. The other three turned and looked at him and as one asked “Seriously”
As they left the barman collapsed, a riot broke out on the streets of Brixton, all the food shops, even Waitrose had their shelves cleared by starving people. Death sighed and set to collecting the dead , a never ending task which pained him. Suddenly his mobile rang
“Hello God here, I see you are all there”
“Yes we’ve been here a while Sir.”
“I know, I suppose you want an apocalypse now?”
“Not really Sir”
“Well you’re not really giving me much choice are you?”
“And a happy New Year to you too Sir”
Death turned his phone off and headed back to the pub, when he arrived it was packed .
They awoke, with no memory of how or when they had arrived there. They stood and watched in wonder as the dawn painted the skies purple, pink, blue and gold.
Gone where the horrors of what they survived, the famine, drought, the bloodshed, the hate all wiped from their memories. They all stood as one marvelling at the sunrise. They were seeing it for the first time.
Mother Nature looked at them all , tutting as she turned to God and asked.” Why have you brought them back.” Her eyes filled with tears of pain and anger. ” You see how they treat me, they rape and abuse me until I am ruined and spent… How could you?”
God touched her arm gently and smiled his beautiful smile. “You can’t get round me this time” Mother Nature wailed, “I can’t go through it again, I just can’t”
God handed her a challis of Nectar and took one himself. Then he spoke, he rarely spoke but his voice was so beautiful that Mother Nature stopped bristling and relaxed. “One more time my dear, just for me, please.” He knew as he spoke the words, she could not resist. “These are my children they will learn”
Mother Nature put down her challis and slowly stood, looking down at her new dress of green and blue she sighed deeply. As she limped away she said to no one in particular…” They never learn, he is deluded. He keeps giving them another chance and they keep destroying me”
God raised his challis calling after her. “Here’s to New Beginnings.” As the words left his mouth Mother Nature flinched as a “child of God” ripped up some plants and threw them to the side for no apparent reason.
The tears welled up in her eyes again. “Beginnings” she hissed through her broken and blackened theeth.
