Song Lyrics Sunday. Celestial Bodies.

Jim Adams

This week Jim Adams has past the baton for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme to King Ben’s Grandma ! So what is the subject she has chosen? Heavenly Bodies, Planets, Moon, Sun, Stars.

Back in 1981, two years before our third and last child was born, I was busy working and bringing up the boys, hubby was away a lot and a big hit of the time was Star. I remember the song with affection, I sang it a lot and even now it often visits me in the guise of an ear worm!

Rock’n Roller the games you play
High flyer see your names in lights
Temporarily social suicide
Ohh don’t you tell me it’s roughAt the top you get the cream of the crop
Image seekers they’re unreal to real
This week breaker
Well next week who knows
Oh don’t you tell me it’s rough
Oh don’t you tell me it’s toughStar
That’s what they call you
How long you’ve waited to get where you are
Star
That’s what you wanted
This week hot shot.A video starRock’n Roller inventing in your head
You cracked it once and you can do it again
Who knows, who cares at where you’re coming from
Oh don’t you tell me it’s roughJust a loner out there on your own
Don’t let anyone get close or near
Imagine that. That you believe all you read
Oh don’t you tell me it’s rough
Oh don’t you tell me it’s toughStar
That’s what they call you
How long you’ve waited to get where you are
Star
That’s what you wanted
This week hot shot, a video starThey can build you up
And they can break you down
With just one word
I know they’re heavy
Now just how many
More like you are trying, (trying), trying, (trying)Star
That’s what they call you
How long you’ve waited to get where you are
Star
That’s what you wanted
This week hot shot, a video starStar
That’s what they call you
How long you’ve waited to get where you are
Star
That’s what you wanted
This week hot shot, a video starStar

Pauline Matthews (born 6 March 1947), better known by her stage name Kiki Dee, is an English singer. Known for her blue-eyed soul vocals, she was the first female singer from the UK to sign with Motown’s Tamla. Perfect Timing is a 1981 album by British singer Kiki Dee. The album marked a brief comeback for the singer, led by the top 20 single “Star”. It was her only album on Ariola Records and reached No.47 on the UK album charts. The title track was also released, peaking at No.66. Two further singles were released; “Midnight Flyer” and “Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever” (a duet with Elton John). The album was produced by Pip Williams.

My dad taught me a lot about classical music, some of which I remember with great affection. One of these I remember with great affection was Gustav Holst’s The Planets. My favourite was Jupiter, the bringer of Joy.

.

The PlanetsOp. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1917. In the last movement the orchestra is joined by a wordless female chorus. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the solar system and its supposed astrological character.

The premiere of The Planets was at the Queen’s Hall, London on 29 September 1918, conducted by Holst’s friend Adrian Boult before an invited audience of about 250 people. Three concerts at which movements from the suite were played were given in 1919 and early 1920. The first complete performance at a public concert was given at the Queen’s Hall on 15 November 1920 by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Albert Coates.

The innovative nature of Holst’s music caused some initial hostility among a minority of critics, but the suite quickly became and has remained popular, influential and widely performed. The composer conducted two recordings of the work, and it has been recorded at least 80 times subsequently by conductors, choirs and orchestras from the UK and internationally.

I also threw in a great rock/heavy metal version.

I always loved Donovan, so many hippy dippy memories come to life every time I hear his Scottish lilt! I can’t believe it was released in 1966 it sounds so much as if it should of come from a much earlier era say the 70s.

Sunshine Superman” is a song written and recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. The “Sunshine Superman” single was released in the United States through Epic Records (Epic 5-10045) in July 1966, but due to a contractual dispute the United Kingdom release was delayed until December 1966, where it appeared on Donovan’s previous label, Pye Records (Pye 7N 17241). The “Sunshine Superman” single was backed with “The Trip” on both the United States and United Kingdom releases. It has been described as “[one of the] classics of the era”, and as “the quintessential bright summer sing along”.

Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could’ve tripped out easy a-but I’ve a-changed my ways
It’ll take time, I know it but in a while
You’re gonna be mine, I know it, we’ll do it in style
‘Cause I made my mind up you’re going to be mineI’ll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody’s hustlin’ just to have a little scene
When I say we’ll be cool I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, a-it never ends
When you’ve made your mind up forever to be mineHmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I’ll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
‘Cause I made my mind up you’re going to be mine
I’ll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can findSuperman or Green Lantern ain’t got a-nothin’ on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
‘Bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you’ve made your mind up forever to be mine
I’ll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you’ve made your mind up forever to be mineI’ll pick up your hand
I’ll pick up your handSource: LyricFind.

R.E.M. what can I say ….. simply the best?

“Man On The Moon,” which appeared on R.E.M.’s eighth album, Automatic For The People, was a massive hit in 1992 and remains one of R.E.M.’s most popular tunes. It is the only entry in this list of songs about the Moon to deal with the conspiracy theories about the 1969 moon landing being faked. Mike Mills, who was credited as a co-writer of “Man On The Moon,” said that they had deliberately written about Andy Kaufman in the song because of odd theories that the comedian had faked his death. “He’s the perfect ghost to lead you through this tour of questioning things,” Mills said in 2018. “Did the Moon landing really happen? Is Elvis really dead? Kaufman was kind of an ephemeral figure at that point, so he was the perfect guy to tie all this stuff together as you journey through childhood and touchstones of life.”
