#TANKA TUESDAY #POETRY CHALLENGE NO. 211, #Abhanga, or #PoetsChoice

Hi its Tuesday and time for Colleen’s Tuesday Tanka Challenge. It is the first Challenge of the month so it is poets choice, so we can pick any form of poetry we fancy. Colleen has found us yet another form of poetry called an Abhanga. I have chosen to try the new form as I love a challenge. I chose also to write two stanzas. Below is how it works.

Abhanga, “the completion” is a stanzaic form commonly used for devotional poetic composition, although it has also been used for cynicism, satire and reflective moods. It was popular from the 13th thru 17th centuries Marathi Region of India and is described as complex and classic. (poetrymagnumopus.com)

The elements of the Abhanga are:

  • stanzaic, written in any number of 4 line stanzas.
  • syllabic, 6-6-6-4 syllables each
  • rhymed L2 and L3 rhyme. Often internal rhyme is employed. End rhyme scheme x a a x , x being unrhymed.

Song Lyric Sunday. 1/12/19 Features.

This week Jim Adams, our gracious host has given us these words for our prompt : Song Lyric Sunday Chin/Ears/Eyes/Face/Mouth/Nose. All facial features.

I have chosen,“In Your Eyes” a song by English rock musician Peter Gabriel from his fifth solo album So (1986). It features Youssou N’Dour singing a part at the end of the song translated into his native Wolof. Gabriel’s lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God. More information here. I have always loved Peter Gabriel, some of his songs are beautiful and easy to love. Some are a tad more difficult. This one I have chosen has grown on me over the years and I now love it.

I hope you don’t mind if throw in a second song. I do love this Beatles song it had great memories for me. “I’ve Just Seen a Face” is the first fully acoustic song by the English rock band the Beatles. It was written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon–McCartney) and features McCartney on vocals. The song appeared on their 1965 United Kingdom album Help! and in the United States on the Capitol Records version of the Rubber Soul album. The song was recorded by the Beatles on 14 June 1965 at EMI Studios in London in the same session as “Yesterday” and “I’m Down“. Information from here.

“I’ve Just Seen A Face”

I’ve just seen a face
I can’t forget the time or place
Where we just met
She’s just the girl for me
And I want all the world to see
We’ve met, mmm-mmm-mmm-m’mmm-mmm

Had it been another day
I might have looked the other way
And I’d have never been aware
But as it is I’ll dream of her
Tonight, di-di-di-di’n’di

Falling, yes I am falling
And she keeps calling
Me back again

I have never known
The like of this, I’ve been alone
And I have missed things
And kept out of sight
But other girls were never quite
Like this, da-da-n’da-da’n’da

Falling, yes I am falling
And she keeps calling
Me back again

Falling, yes I am falling
And she keeps calling
Me back again

I’ve just seen a face
I can’t forget the time or place
Where we just met
She’s just the girl for me
And I want all the world to see
We’ve met, mmm-mmm-mmm-da-da-da

Falling, yes I am falling
And she keeps calling
Me back again
Falling, yes I am falling
And she keeps calling
Me back again
Oh, falling, yes I am falling
And she keeps calling
Me back again

Happy Sunday everyone. 💜

Cinquain: His Eyes

His eyes

Blue like deep pools

Beguiling, and tempting

Huge open windows of the soul,

I see.

JusJoJan: Butterfly Girl.

Here is the butterfly girl, eyes alive feelings a twirl

You can’t believe what you see, as her wings unfurl.

Knowledge beyond  bounds takes  you by surprise

It is there, all there reflected  in here eyes.

Silver elusive dancing motes of sunrise dust

Like a halo around her head, gold, amber and rust.

What is  she thinking. can you tell?

Beware, be careful she will slip you under her spell.

Here she is the butterfly  girl

Up tippytoe  wings flippyflap skirts swirly whirl.

Hazel brown eyes that captivate

Watch  her though. I warn you before it is too late.

Sun bright colours like fractals of light

Leave colours on the wall casting off  all blight.

Gayly she thrashes her colourful  skirts about

The butterfly girl , watch out for her magical pout.

The Window to the Soul

The window to the soul , your eyes are the window to your soul.

My father always told me, look into peoples eyes

The truth will always be there, look carefully the answer will be whole.

The hand can distract , the mouth can  tell you lies

The truth will always be there, look deep and you will see

The love, the hate , the hopes, the need to kept or set free.

A  smile can be soft, and gentle a rush of gentle care

The eyes must mirror that smile for it to be true

If the eyes are not smiling then true feeling is not there

So if the whole face is not reacting there is nothing there for you.

ooo2

The window to the soul honest true and whole I believe my dad no truer words were ever told.
