Colleen’s 2019 Weekly #Tanka Tuesday #Poetry Challenge No. 152, #Poet’sChoice

It’s the first of the month and you know what that means! Poets choose your own words.

This challenge is for Haiku, Senryu, Haiga, Tanka, Haibun, Etheree, Nonet, Shadorma, and Cinquain poetry forms.

So what to choose it is Autumn and all that entails so here we go. I think I will go with a Tanka. My two words are Cold and Dead. I believe the rules on the first of the month mean we don’t need synonyms. So here is an Autumnal Tanka.

This is part of Colleen’s Tuesday Tanka Challenge.

Cold, damp Autumn days
Burning leaves, and bonfire haze
Dark early, cosy up
Harvest in, the ground is dead
Hopes and dreams for life ahead.

August Stanza 8

It is August and so Jane is doing : a chain of images each one suggested by the last word in the preceding poem. They’ll be short, a single image of just a few lines. It will be interesting to see where it ends up by the end of the month.

Kat will be doing short 3,4, or 5 line poems no syllable counts of rhymes, starting with the word ‘August’ on the first day. The last word of the poem will be the first word of day two’s poem, and so on until the end of the month.

Finally I shall be doing all types of poetry but each poem will start with the last word in the preceding poem.

Today’s poem Rhyming Couplets.

Dead

Dead the light gone out

Lost forever without a doubt

————————–

With all hope banished, gone

What’s left but pain to feed upon

Passion Exstinguished

Down the cold, dark and emty years

Walking alone fighting off acient fears.

Yearning, craving long  denied warmth

Dried up and hollow inside

Passion painfully  smothered now died.

Pointless to beg you have long locked that door

I accepting, cope finding I look for fire no more.

Just give me a little respect and care

I will honour your wishes . I believe  that is fair.

Darkness closes in the freeze between us

Like  winter in a garden all is laid bare turning to dust.

I take  my blanket of words  and wrap myslef up tight

In their warming balm. My head full of stars I drift into the night.

Down the years there have been so many  battles to fight

Hiding behind a smile constantly smothering the need  for flight.

A master at  lieing  and presenting a public face

Knowing  the truth , my failure , my secret is my disgrace .

Down the cold, dark and emty years

Walking alone fighting off acient fears.

Yearning, craving long  denied warmth

Dried up and hollow inside

Passion painfully  smothered now died.

NaPoWriMo, Day 25, Ballard Of Helmand

NaPoWriMo. Day 25. Today’s prompt is to write a Ballard. I have written one about war because that is what a lot of Ballard’s are about

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE BALLARD OF HELMAND
They all flew into Helmand  with sunshine in their eyes
Ready for the heat and smells but they did not expect the flies.
Their new kits at the ready, their rifles virgin new
A newly striped Sergeant  ready to tell them what to do.
Oh! keep your heads down boys look for those I.E.D.s
Remember what we said, keep your eyes peeled please
They were settled into barracks and found out were to eat
Bottled water came in handy and mum’s sun lotion worked a treat.
They were all excited when ready for their first patrol
All of them on  on edge not sure what would unfold
Oh! keep your heads down boys look for those I.E.D.s
Remember what we said, keep your eyes peeled please
They all set off together with everything intact
But almost at once,they heard the bang and felt the impact.
They realized they were not safe, no one out here was their friend
Out on their first patrol, two dead, and in the handlers arms, his loyal dog’s life ends.
Oh! keep your heads down boys look for those I.E.D.s
Remember what we said, keep your eyes peeled please
They all fly into Brize Norton their families watch the skies
Brothers , sisters,mothers, wives and children all with tears in their eyes.
They all left for Helmand shiny bright and new
That’s not how they return though you all know that is true
Oh! keep your heads down boys look for those I.E.D.s
Remember what we said, keep your eyes peeled please
