Every single  one  is  calorie  free! Plus of course  we now have spirits  and liquors  to warm the coldest of  you.

If we were having  Coffee: I would ask  you what  has been going on in your world this week, has  anything  deeply affected  you, have  you need a sympathetic ear, a shoulder to cry  on or  just  needed someone  to make  you laugh! If  yes  feel free to talk it out  here  with us. We will all help if  we can.

Lets  join  everyone  here  and  all the  other  “IF  WE  WERE  HAVING  COFFEES”

If we were having Coffee: I would  remind  you  that  there  are lots of  other  coffee mornings  all shared  and organized  By  Diana  and  Gene’O  over at,Part time monster

If  we were having  coffee: I would have  to draw  your  attention  to  Paul’s  guest  post  this  week  as it is  very  interesting, I  am  not  going  to go  over  what  he has  written  as  he has  covered  it  so  eloquently!  Now  what  has  been going on  here  well the  weeks  flash  buy  so  quickly   and  I  am  sure  I shall meet  my self  going  backwards  one  day!

So  the usual  vists  to  the  gym  and  classes, then  on  Wednesday   my  friend  L  and I  spent  a cultural  day  in the local  museum, it  was really  interesting  …. luckily  for  you  there  was no  photography  allow !!We also  enjoyed  a  pot of  tea and a  scone each. We had  a lovely  day.

If  we were having  coffee: Friday  was  interesting  too  as  I was  due  to  meet  a friend  who  lives up  the road  but  who I have not seen since  before  our River  trip. My  sister  came  over in the morning  so I could help her  with  her  laptop, this task  took longer  than either of us  had  expected  and I  rung  my  friend  to say  I was going to  be half  an hour  late. ” Aha!  she  said  that is  fine  as I want  to  kidnap  you ”  I was intrigued  as ( touch  wood)  I have never  been  kidnapped  and have no  wish  to be!

Well I  sorted  my  sister out  as best I  could  and  she was happy  because  we had  sorted  her  immediate  problem. So I  went  along  to  my  friend’s house. The  kidnapping   turned out  to be  a trip  to Bisham (the place  hubby  and I  visited  the other  week. ) Her  son  was  doing  the last  of  his  duties  as  youth  leader (  moving into the  real world  and  a new  career ) He  had been incharge  of  a camp  of  young  people  and  we had  been  roped in to  help  clear  up  the  area  an  take  two  young  lads home!

Geese with lone duck cleaning up

When we arrived,  there  were pile of  equipment  everywhere  and people  loading  cars  with  camping  and  cooking  gear  and  children! We  joined in  and  soon  the  field  looked  pristine  again as in top  picture ! There  was  a Goose  there who  had  broken  a wing , I  asked  about  him  and  was  told  that  he had  broken  his wing  last year  but  the RSPB  had  fixed him  up  and  though  he  has  a strange  protuding  part  to his wing  he has happily  survived  the year!

As  you can see  the only  evidence  that  there had  been  a  camp  there  at  all was  the  different  colour  patches  on the  field!  That is  shown in  above  with  the  lone Duck  who joined  the  Geese  in their  clear  up  routine!

Ready for dinner today

If  we  were having  coffee: I would  tell you how  we have  been  eating  our  potatoes  (  crop  all gone! )  and  our  lovely green beans! It is  so good  to just  pop out  to the garden  and  just pick  the  amount  you  want  for dinner.  The  tomatoes  are  getting  huge  and it looks like we will be  making  lots of  chutney  again this  year! I say  we but  it is  really  the hubby’s  domain.

If we were having coffee:  Well it has  been  a very  busy  week  again, tell me  please  where  has half of  this year  gone ??

Well  settle  down  with your  drinks  and cakes   and I  shall  tell you  about  the big  plan! What  I hear  you  asking?  Right  the hubby  has  suggested  we have a new  kitchen   and I  actually  agree! Even though it will mean a lot of upheaval  it  will be  worth it. So  far  we have  waded  through  the  catalogue  of  the  manufacter  that  we have chosen. We  have picked  the unit  and  narrowed  the colour  scheme  down to  three  colours ( Ivory, sage  or light blue) . We  have spent hours  choosing   which  white  goods  we  want   and  also  spent  ages  researching  cooker hoods.

We  have  decided  to  have  the hob  on  a central  island   which means  the extracter  hood  will be  suspended  above  said  hob! Well I hae to apologise  for  all the  slips of  paper  with  drawings  on  and  the  catalogues  strewn  all over  the place !  move  them out  the way  and  make  yourselves  comfortable…. watch  this spot.

If we  were having Coffee :  My  gym buddy  and I  have  been working very hard  this  week  and  we have  signed up  for another  course of  extra  lessons  to see us  through  to the end  of  the year !

Can I refill your cup or  get you  a calorie  free  treat  we have some  gorgeous  cakes  this week.

Racism, Police Brutality, or a Bad Day?

ESCORT TO AFTERNOON HIGH TEA AT KING EDWARD HOTEL (ALEX CONSIGLIO/TORONTO SUN)

Paul Your Barista

Welcome to Willow’s weekly coffee and tea garden. My name is Paul; I’ll be your barista today. I’m happy to see you have come for a cuppa and a chat. Please come into the garden and make yourself comfortable. Willow fluffed the cushions on the chairs and set the tables in the garden so we can have a cuppa and chat as we soak up the sun and enjoy the beautiful plants. As usual, I’d be pleased to bring a pot of whatever beverage you prefer – we have a wide range of teas and coffees to satisfy our world-wide readership. Also available is a large selection of spirits for addition to your cuppa or in its place. We can relax amongst the flowers while we discuss the affairs of the week both personal and/or worldwide. How has your week been?

Sandra Bland

So, the big news item here this week has been the death of Sandra Bland, a young black woman, in her Texas jail cell, where she ended up after failing to signal a lane change. That sounds absolutely ludicrous, I know, and yet it is true. The police say she was arrested for assaulting a police officer after a traffic stop went bad. And that once in jail, she committed suicide on the 3rd day. Her family says that Sandra was upbeat, not suicidal, and had just moved to Texas from Illinois to start a new job at the university where she had graduated some years before. They suggest that Sandra’s death was not suicide. One of the best coverages I’ve seen so far, including the dash-cam videos from the original arrest, is on CNN    see  here

Sandra Exiting Car when Threatened with Tazer

If We Were Having Coffee

Would you like another cuppa? Perhaps a sweet? I spent many years on the road and have been stopped by and involved with police and other officials like weight enforcement officers and customs officers, a great deal. When I watched the dash-cam video of the traffic stop that initiated Sandra’s death, I cringed. There was no doubt from early on that the incident was going to escalate and come to a bad end. Typically, of the two people involved – the officer and the citizen – one or the other will take steps to stop escalation. Personally, I always tried to be that person, rather than depending on the officer to back down. In this instance, neither the officer nor Sandra backed down. The officer always has the upper hand as he/she represents the law and their word will be taken over the citizen’s word. In the vast majority of videos I have seen of traffic stops, when the citizen is upset or angry, the officer will reduce the escalation, while still giving the ticket. They are supposedly trained for this and yet this was not what happened in the Sandra Bland traffic stop.

Many media outlets are saying that this is yet another example of how blacks are treated differently and unfairly by law officers. Perhaps this is true – if it happens more often to blacks than whites. In my opinion, this traffic stop, taken on its own, had little to do with race and simply reflects the bad end that occurs when both the officer and the citizen are upset or angry. It escalated to a shoving match which then became an assault charge.

How about a re-fill of your cuppa? Remember all of our sweets are calorie free – so dig in. I was called into a dept of highway scale one day while trucking. I was asked to produce my paperwork and I complied. There was a problem that came from the way the shipper had filled out my bills of lading and I was upset as I had specifically told them how to do it and then I had failed to check to see if they had complied – and they had not. I was completely legal and yet my paperwork indicated that I was illegal. This caused undue problems that resulted in my swearing in front of the scale officer. He immediately backed off and asked if I was having a hard day. I was so surprised by his change of tone that I had to ask what had precipitated it. He admitted that he and the other officers had just undergone training on how to recognize and de-escalate potentially hazardous situations. He wouldn’t elaborate. After about an hour of phone calls and getting new bills of lading faxed with apologies from the shipper, I was free to go.

I began inquiring of the grapevine as to why the Kelly Lake scale officers had been putthrough sensitivity training. The answer was quite amusing, if not in a peaceful way. Apparently some weeks before, an upset driver had been called into the scale as I was. Through no fault of his own, his truck was illegal and the officer was abusive verbally. The driver, a very large man, snapped and reached across the counter, grabbed the officer by his jacket, pulled him screaming over the counter and hit him so hard the officer lost consciousness. There were numerous witnesses and although the driver was charged with assault, all the witnesses made it clear in court that had the officer responded differently, the whole situation would have been avoided. The judge was not pleased with the actions of the officers and ordered sensitivity training. Ha! The driver was found guilty but his punishment was reduced due to extenuating circumstances.

Interior of Sandra’s Cell here

The sort of encounter that initiated the Sandra Bland situation is not uncommon and is not a function of race. What happened after that, in her case though, is, so far a mystery. The officials show camera footage of the outside of Sandra’s cell that makes it clear that no one entered or left her cell from the time she was last checked until she was found dead, hanging by a garbage bag from an overhead bar. Fellow inmates in nearby cells also testified that no one entered Sandra’s cell and that Sandra was distraught and crying constantly, suggesting she may have taken her own life. She had no criminal record and no record of any mental health problems – although she had mentioned on her Facebook page that she was depressed and suffering from PTSD. An investigation has been launched.

On that note, that’s about all we have room for this week, so it’s time to settle in with another cuppa and enjoy the garden. Sweets anyone? Please join me in thanking Willow for her invitation to tea. We are all honored that you dropped by today to visit. I hope you’ve enjoyed yourself and the conversation and please look around at Willow’s other posts while you’re here. Willow is over there serving her guests and chatting it up. Let’s go see how she is today. Have a great week. We look forward to seeing you back here forsweets and beverages of your choice again next week.

Are These Heavy?

your Barista Paul

It’s great to be back here at Willow’s this week. Mark and his family were wonderful hosts whilst Willow was touring the Rhine. So, personally it has been a relatively uneventful week this week. My bed is quite low to the floor and I was having a hard time getting out of it in the morning as my knees don’t work as they used to. I was looking around trying to find a way to raise the bed up 6 or 8 inches – not only for ease of egress but also to allow more storage underneath.

So, I took my handicap bus to Home Depot – for our continental readers, this is a huge building supply chain in North America whose stores each cover acres. You could easily build a house inside the store and never have to go out to get anything.

I wandered around the store for over an hour looking for blocking or anything that could be inexpensively repurposed to raise the bed. I had checked out concrete blocks on-line  before going, so I visited them out in the building supply yard. Whew, they were a lot bigger in person than they were on the screen. At almost 50 pounds each, they were heavy. I checked out the lumber dept but I have few tools and lumber was only sold by the 8, 10 or 12 foot sections. Besides the planks were quite expensive.

Would you like another cuppa? Perhaps a sweet? In the end I found myself back at the concrete blocks – at only $3 each, definitely the best option financially, but the weight. I had a shopping cart and it groaned when I put the first block in – in hindsight I should have gotten one of the big platform dollies they have for heavy supplies. I shifted the block to the back of the cart closest to the handle and over the bigger wheels. Then I loaded in 3 more blocks as the cart sagged lower after each addition. Making my way through the store to the checkout was an adventure as the heavy cart wanted to go in straight lines only. I paid the bill and pushed my blocks out front to wait for my ride. I must confess I was concerned that the driver might object to 200 pounds of concrete blocks. I have seen the unionized drivers complain about too many bags of groceries, let alone building supplies.

I was thinking up all sorts of approaches to convince the driver how important these blocks were when a taxi pulled up. More often than not, the handicap service uses their own busses but sometimes they farm out work to taxis – no cost to the users. Hmmm, interesting development. I waved him down (they put a “PARA-Transpo” sign on the side of the car when on handicap service) and he backed up to my cart, popping the trunk.

I greeted the driver and he looked hesitant, asking: “I hope these aren’t too heavy?” Ha! I assured him they were not heavy at all as I swung one into the trunk. He grabbed a second one with one hand and couldn’t move it until he adjusted his grip and used both hands. He let out a grunt as he lowered it into the trunk. I had the other two aboard before he could straighten up. I just smiled at him and walked around to the front seat. He dropped me and my concrete blocks off at the back door to my apartment so I wouldn’t have to lug the blocks all the way through the building. The wooden steps up to my back deck are not the sturdiest and I was a bit concerned about having my own weight plus the blocks on one step. So I moved them up a few steps at a time as I stood below. In short order I had them in my room and under the legs of my bed. They work perfect. When I sit on the edge of the bed now, my legs hang straight down and my feet are flat on the floor. Time for a cup of coffee.

On that note, that’s about all we have room for this week, so it’s time to settle in with another cuppa and enjoy the garden. Sweets anyone? Please join me in thanking Willow for her invitation to tea. We are all honored that you dropped by today to visit. Wednesay  was  LindaGHill’s  One liner Wednesday, the  tour  guide  did  say  that  sentence  about  the  wolf  population ….. I  wrote  down  as it left  her lips!! Also  silent  Wednesday  that  was  easy  too  as  we had  so  much  to  see!

Friday  again  just  flowed  from  me  (  excuse  the pun)  acrostic  river , and  Suturday  was LindsGHill’s  SoCs , that  was  about  the people I  had  met  and  those  I  already  love.

If  we  were having  coffee : So today I  will  be rushing in  and out  having  a quick  word  there  and filling a  cup  up  here! Hoping  you  don’t  think  me  rude.  I  am trying  to  read  all  your posts,  there  are loads to read as I  did not  have a lot of  time  to  do  much on  Wordpress  as  the ship and  the real  world offered  so much to  experience  but I did try  when I  could  get  WIFI.

If  we  were having Coffee :  I  would  now  announce  that  it is  Garden Catch up  time…. I know , I know  but  we are  proud of  it!!

We did have a friend look after the garden

We  did  have a  friend  to  look  after  the garden  and  she watered  the  veg  plus a new Fusia  we  had  recently  bought ! We  knew  everything  else  would  survive! It  has  been very  hot  here  and in Europe   and  the gardens  are  crying  out for  a  rain  storm . Believe it or  not  right on cue  as  I write  this, a  light  rain  is  starting  to fall. ….. Okay  If  we  were having  Coffee: I would  tell  you how  on Monday  the husband  and I  decided  to  take  a  spur of  the moment  trip  to  Winchester  to  see  the Round  Table  which is  kept in  the Great  hall, also to  see again  the  legendary  Cathedral. Well the  weather on  the  trip  down  was  appalling   it  poured  with  rain. As  we  arrived in Winchester  the  weather  did  improve   and  so  we parked up  and  made  our  way  to  the Cathedral , horror  of  horrors  we  found  it  was  closed!! … What!  closed  why ? well it  was being  decorated   for  a flower  festival. We  did  feel  sorry  for  the many  people  being  turned  away  and who  had  come  from  abroad, places  like Australia  , America, Japan,  Canada, all over infact.  So  we  visited  the museum which  was full of  interesting  exhibits .

Well  the  rain  did stop  and  we had a lovely  day  even if  the Cathedral  was  closed  as  was  the  Great Hall luckily   we have seen  the  round table  and  the Cathedral before!

If We Were Having Coffee – June 28/2015 Guest Post: Rights and Freedoms

Rights and Freedoms

Paul Your Barista

Welcome to Willow’s weekly coffee and tea garden. My name is Paul; I’ll be your barista today. I’m happy to see you have come for a cuppa and a chat. Please come into the garden and make yourself comfortable. Willow has put out the cushions on the chairs and set the table under the canopy so we can have a cuppa and chat.

Well now folks, over here in North America this week, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) made two earth shaking rulings this week – literally changing the face of American law and culture in a way celebrated by many. Early in the week they ruled that Obamacare (the American government’s organizing and making mandatory health insurance) was to stay, and so were any funds used to support that program. Then later in the week that same high court ruled that same sex marriages were to be legalized across the country. Both of these rulings were unexpected and neither was one that I thought I would see in my lifetime.

The US is slowly but surely separating into two diametrically opposing groups, roughly organized around degree of wealth. The wealthy, under the Republican Party, oppos Obamacare and any other policies that have the government securing the well being of the population. They are adamant that individual responsibility for personal well being is sacrosanct, even if this means the bankruptcy or even death of the individual. This is very easy for them to believe as they have the funds to support their own health care and all else. On the flip side of the coin, many average Americans had no health care coverage and could not buy any. Now they can and without any prior conditions limitations. Mind you it is expensive, but health care in general is expensive. The Supreme Court has made Obamacare official – it is here to stay. This is a huge step for America towards providing basic needs for their population. A very new and important step.

Would you like another cuppa? Perhaps a sweet? Corporate America has a mantra that they take care of their employees. The truth is that one of the central outcomes of capitalism is to transfer wealth to those who are already wealthy – and we can see the effects of this as fewer and fewer hold more and more of the wealth on a yearly basis.

One of the results of this gradual devaluation of the population is the reduction of their ability to pay for healthcare. To keep a healthy populace it is important to offer financially affordable healthcare – and that means affordable insurance. (Or socialized healthcare like Canada – which is a sort of insurance supported by taxation.) So, the implementation of Obamacare and its confirmation by SCOTUS , is a critical step in recognizing the responsibility of government to care for its citizens. I say: Well Done.

Then towards end of the week, SCOTUS ruled again. This time they legalized same sex marriages. This was a surprise even to those who were supporting the effort. It was possible for the court to come to a decision that was half way between legalizing and disallowing. They did not – they went all the way. Now, in the United States, the individual states have a lot of authority and may not follow the federal law. However that is an easily solved issue by simply relocating. Also, the ruling gives all the rights of federal marital benefits to same sex couples, benefits like pensions and survivor rights and medical and financial power of attorney, regardless of the position of the individual

One would think that this ruling would not raise any ire, after all it is simply the extension of rights to those who have been denied. It harms no one, and changes nothing for the general population. And yet here is a quote from a blogger on a recent post about the upcoming US Presidential election: “Perry for President: anti-immigration and anti-gay. There’s no other candidate in my opinion. My husband says his policies have brought prosperity to Texas and it’s the kind of thing I’d like to see happen for our whole country.” – Kate Minter  commenting on Insanitybytes2. And that is pretty tame – many comments have been filled with vitriol. Even one of the dissenting Supreme Court Justices – Scalia, of course (he votes against any public benefit cases) – said the ruling was “higgledy-piggledy” and “pure applesauce” , whatever that means.

We look forward to seeing you back here for sweets and beverages of your choice again next week.

IF WE WERE HAVING COFFEE: TROOPING OF THE COLOUR AND GARDENS

Hello  everyone  welcome  to  the garden  we have a marquee  and  heaters, all the garden  furniture  has  been washed  and  I have put out cushions for your  comfort.

Well what  do  you  think  shall  we  chance  it . Now  as  always  we have  tea  and coffee  from all over  the world not to mention all our cakes  and muffins  and  as Paul  calls  them sweets!

If we were having Coffee: I would  remind  you  that  there  are lots of  other  coffee mornings  all shared  and organized  By  Diana  and  Gene’O  over at,Part time monster

Okay  If  we  were  having  coffee : Lets  start  with yesterday  which  was  the Queen’s official  birthday ( unlike  us  mere  commoners  she has  at least  two!) Well in honur  of  this  event  there  is  the  pomp  and  cermony  that  is  know  as  the trooping  of  the  colours . Now  this  a great  spectical  even if  you are  not  a royalist  you have  to be in awe of  it!

The Queen has attended in a carriage rather than riding, which she did before that on 36 occasions, riding side-saddle and wearing the uniform of the regiment whose Colour was being trooped.  She  last  attended  on  a  horse  in  1987.The regiments take their turn for this honour in rotation as operational commitments permit. You  can read  all about  the Trooping of  the colour   here.

After  the  parade which  has  bands  mounted ( imagine  having  to read music, ride  your  horse  and keep he or /she in line  and pace  and  play an instrament  all at once!)  and on  foot. Horses, carriages,  horse  drawn  guns, and marching  men  and  all corographed  to  the enst !

After  the parade  there is a forty one  gun salute  in  Hyde Park,  they use  the guns  they use in the parade. All  these are  original  world  war one  guns  and one is  roumoured  to  be  the gun  which  fired  the  first  shell at  the  Battle of  the Somme.

Then  the  members of  the Royal  family  are  taken  back  to  Buckingham  Palace  to  appear  on  the balcany  all together  …. a  rare  occurance . All the  spectators  surge up  the Mall and  congregate  outside  Buckingham Place  to  get a glimpse of  the Royals  and to wave  and celebrate….. it’s  not just  us  brits  people  come  from all over  the world!

Righ  Photos  and videos?

And  here  is  a video  that  catches  the  feel of  the day !

OH! If  we  were having  coffee :  After  all my  jabbering on  about  the  trooping  of  the colour  ( it  was  the  Welsh  Guards  this  year) You  must  be  gagging  for  another  cuppa  and  a cake!! I  am forgetting  my  manners  sorry!

Let us  have  a quick  look around  the  garden  nothing  much  has  changed  except everything  has  got  bigger. Mind  you  the  white  rose  tree is  looking glorious!I  think  all our  roses  are  magnificent  if  I  say  so  myself  though  Tangental  could  out  rose  us  ( ceck it out)   with his  garden!!

Well the  weather has been a mixture  this  week, more  coffee  anyone? We  have  had  all four  seasons, pelting  rain  cold  winds, frost  over night  and and  glorious  heat wave ( well for us that is ) weather!

If we were having  coffee: Shall  we  all go  across  and  see Paul  and  all his  guests ,  we need  to  encourage  Paul  to  start  writing  a  book  about  the  nitty  gritty  of  dialysis and  all the  wonderful  little incites  he  gives us  weekly  of  his treatment  highs  and lows. It  would  be  a great  help  to many  even those  who  are not even going through  treatment! Also  all the lovely  little assides  of  people  he meets  while  at  the hospital …come  one lets  twist his arm , gently of  course!

Once  again I  thank  you  all for  visiting  me  and Paul  too  we love to  see you  and hear  what  you have to say  and  we hope  you will join us again next  week! Hugs  to you  all!
