Well 15 months on and still the pandemic was causing havoc. Most people had to work from home. For many this meant long days and nights alone with a computer screen. For Pete it had become depressing, soul destroying.
He made sure he got out for at least an hour’s walk everyday, he used his exercise bike in the evening, had his shopping delivered and made sure he cooked good healthy food.
When he could, he’d get out and meet friends…… That had been impossible during the early lockdowns. Things were finally beginning to come together and ease for now ( no one could be sure what the the next few weeks could bring.)
Pete opened his daily meeting, only to be greeted by empty screens on mute. In the beginning everyone had been eager to join in the meetings, screens and sound on. Slowly they had all withdrawn.
“Come on guys I am bending over backwards to help you guys… For pity’s sake cut me me some slack!” Pete shouted.
Slowly screens filled with his techs and engineers and program architects.
He smiled “hi guys we have the big boss joing us today!”
Just then the boss appeared on his screen.
“Right guys we want you all back in the office for the end of September, three days a week.”
Pete could not control himself he jumped up clapping and cheering! It broke the ice everyone laughed! The boss smile and asked Pete was he pleased!
Pete thanked goodness an end was in sight and that he’d got dressed properly this morning.
Later that day when the team signed in for their next meeting they all looked askance at Pete’s square.. there was a white edged, grey, board with the word Community on it and infront a collection of five toy figures doing different things.
After a second or two Pete’s face appeared….”that’s us guys we are a team, we are a community! Keep those screens on , unmute your devices. Let’s communicate let’s rebond.”

Apathy.

I walk the earth, caring for none. Travelling by stealth at night, avoiding the sun
hand.

You pity me, that’s just grand

Wandering your world at will,

Hospitals and morgues I am happy to fill.

No feelings for you pitiful lives.

Your problems mean less than a bag of knives.

I spoil your days with bad news,

Cancer, dementia and murderous baby blues.

I am the dead look in a prostitute’s eyes,

The funeral of each soldier that dies.

I am the bomb, the bullet and grenade.

The million dollar deal on which someone will renege .

I am the loss of innocent child’s limbs.

I am the suicide bomber’s blinding belief.

I am this world’s broken, dieing of grief.

I am the filth you fear so much

The sleaze and the open legs you dare not touch.

I am the disease that stalks you at night

The slash of a knife in a drunken fight.

Your worst, greatest and last no hope

The the scabby hands that grope.

Around in your homes, schools and playground.

I am all that is your worst nightmare

I am the wrongs that you have no intention to repair.

I am Apathy.

I walk the earth, I care for none. I travel by stealth mostly at night, I avoid the sun. Alone I am alone I stand, no care for any of you, no helping hand.

Animals avoid my path they are wiser than you , they want no trouble they avoid the inevitable aftermath. I wander through your world at will, your hospitals, your morgues I am pleased to fill.

I have no feeling for you pitiful lives. Your problems mean less to me than a bag of knives. The number of days that I have spoiled with bad news, a cancer here, dementia there not to forget a murderous bout of baby blues.

I am the dead look in a prostitute’s eyes, I am the funeral of each soldier that dies. I am the bomb, the bullet the grenade. I am the million dollar deal on which some one will renege . I am the loss of ever soldier’s or even innocent civilian’s limb. I am the suicide bomber’s blinding belief.  I an this world’s broken and dieing grief.

I am the filth you fear so much I am the sleaze and the open legs you dare not touch. I am the disease that stalks you at night I am the slash of a knife in a drunken fight. I am your worst your greatest and last no hope I am the the scabby hands that grope.

I shall always be around in your homes your schools and your playground. I am all that is your worst nightmare I am the wrongs that you have no intention to repair.

I am Apathy.
