#TANKA TUESDAY WEEKLY #POETRY CHALLENGE NO. 223, #THEMEPROMPT

It’s the fourth week of the month! Are you ready for a theme prompt? Kat from last month’s challenge picked the theme:

“Pick a Flower” and using one of the syllabic forms we use, tell us why it is special to you.

My mother was a gentle woman, loving and kind, her favourite flowers were Anemone, I have written a Nonet about her and her flowers because I miss her.

Always small yet colourful
Never over assuming
Elf like colour pools
Mother loved these flowers
Open bright and blooming
Nothing pleased her as these
Enchanting little Anemones.

Song Lyric Sunday. Bye Bye.

Good Sunday Everyone! Well it’s time again for Song Lyric Sunday. This week our debonair host Jim Adams has given us the prompt : – Arrivederci/Bon-voyage/Ciao/Farewell/Goodbye/Hasta la vista/Sayonara/Shalom. Well once again we have plenty to get our teeth into.

First up though BAY City Rollers frontman Les McKeown died at 65, the band announced today. He died suddenly at home on April 20, with the group paying tribute to the former heart-throb.

Last September his fellow group member Ian Mitchell died.

The Bay City Rollers are a Scottish pop rock band known for their worldwide teen idol popularity in the 1970s. They have been labelled the ‘tartan teen sensations from Edinburgh’ and “the first of many acts heralded as the ‘biggest group since the Beatles'”.

Caterina Caselli (born 10 April 1946) is an Italian record producer, music executive, singer, bass player and actress. It’s a lovely song but despite searching hard I could not find the lyrics but it has arriviederci and ciao in the title and lyrics. …enjoy.

Oceanic is a 1996 studio album by Greek electronic composer Vangelis. It was released in Europe on October 25, 1996 by East West Records, and in the United States on January 28, 1997 by Atlantic Records. A single “Song of the Seas”, with b-side “Aquatic Dance”, was released simultaneously.

The first track “Bon Voyage” starts with the sounds of sea waves, and continues as orchestral electronica. It fades into “Sirens’ Whispering”, which feature beat sequence with melody and choir. “Dreams of Surf” is based around acoustic piano. “Spanish Harbour” also features beat and melody as well Spanish guitar. “Islands of the Orient” is a blend of Tangerine Dream-like sequences, chinoiseriejazzy melody. “Fields of Coral” is the most ambient track on the album. “Aquatic Dance” is built on a synth-bass ostinato and synth-vocals. “Memories of Blue” recalls the “Memories of Green” from Blade Runner. “Song of the Seas” is mellow sequencer-based track, which fades out to the surf sounds that began the album. The album includes effects which sound like whales, ships horns, porpoises, seagulls and even chimes.[1]

The album showcase melodic orchestration, and by sound is more similar to the New-age music rather than his experimental albums.

Goodbye My Lover” is a song by the English singer-songwriter James Blunt, written by Blunt and British songwriter Sacha Skarbek, for Blunt’s debut album Back to Bedlam (2004). The song was produced by Tom Rothrock and Jimmy Hogarth and recorded in the home of actress Carrie Fisher. The single received a positive reception from music critics. It was released as the fourth single in November 2005 and reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, where it became Blunt’s second top ten single. It also reached the top ten in SwedenAustralia and France. In the United States, “Goodbye My Lover” had modest success on the Billboard singles chart, where it reached number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 due to digital downloads, even though the single was not yet released in the US. The song was formally released in the United States on 7 November 2006.

Talisk are a Scottish folk band composed of Mohsen AminiHayley Keenan, and Graeme Armstrong. The band rose to prominence after winning the 2015 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards “Folk Band of the Year” category in 2017. Talisk were formed in 2014 with Mohsen Amini, Hayley Keenan, and Craig Irving. Irving left to join Mànran, and was replaced on the guitar by Graeme Armstrong. In 2015 the band won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award. Following this Amini became the 2016 BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician. The success of the band continued to grow into 2017 where they were awarded “Folk Band of the Year” at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. Amini then followed to be named the 2018 “Musician of the Year” at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Their debut album, Abyss, was released in 2016, and their second album, Beyond, was released in 2018. That same year, they received the Belhaven Bursary for Innovation in Scottish Music, the largest music prize in Scotland.

Hurricane, also known as Hurricane Girls, are a popR&BSerbiangirl band formed by Zoran Milinković in November 2017, consisting of three members: Sanja Vučić, Ivana Nikolić and Ksenija Knežević. “Hasta la vista” is a song by Hurricane. It was chosen to represent Serbia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, that has since been cancelled. Its lyrics, in Serbian save for the title and a line in the second verse, revolve around the subject talking to a lover who has been unfaithful to her. Wikipedia

Like Dice

Altered carbon and stardust we
Play along the vast universe
Then, thrown like dice it is a curse.
Untethered by mortality
We glide about the galaxy.
Waiting patiently to be called
To join race and be enthralled.
Spiralling down we fall to earth
With pain we experience birth.
To start anew until recalled.

#WRITEPHOTO – The Secret in the Stone .

For visually challenged writersthe image shows a stone or a tomb with a key-like inscription but no words upon it.

The Secret in the stone – Image by KL Caley.

They all look at my stone from the wrong end. Hey go to the other end and you’ll clearly see the story of my fate…. Why does nobody listen, or even think. It’s so cold down here I have been trapped so long.

Well as no one will make the leap of fate and view my story from the right end I will enlighten any of you with time to listen.

Just before the days of old, when knights were bold and round tables were something of an oddity. I was a young trainee to a black witch called Morgana. That’s black witch as in black magic. I had been stolen by Morgana just after I emerged from my mother’s womb. There I lay exhausted and cold waiting for some warm milk to fill my tummy.

Suddenly i was snatched away by this swirling, heaving cloak which was the witch. Now to be fair I had not bonded with my mother as she was not altogether interested in me. I had heard her cursing my existence each day I was inside her, and she didn’t have time to repent any of that or grieve for me because she died hours after my birth.

Anyway I am not asking for any sympathy because Morgana turned out to be a brilliant mother right from the start. I was kept warm , well fed and she loved me … She wanted me.

I grew and learned everything I was taught willingly. Morgana was delighted with my progress. I became as beautiful as she and as clever and that pleased her.

Now I have all the time in world but I can tell by the way you are all hopping from one foot to the other you don’t! So I will get a move on. every five years we would meet with the old wizard Merlin and his charge Arthur. Apart from being a boy Arthur was very like me. Not in looks but in provenance, his mother had died shortly after giving birth and he had been taken and brought up by Merlin, a white wizard …. infact we were yin and yan. We always got on well and played happily, which is more than could be said of our wards!

Now Morgana and Merlin both had interpreted what was written in stone a different way. Merlin construed that young Arthur was to be king and unite the Britons where as Morgana’s vision, the true one, saw me, Arthura as Queen of all Briton.

The day of our 20th birthdays arrived and we were called to the King’s stone to see which of us could extract Excalibur from the stone. You all know the story, “who ever could pull the sword from stone would rule all Briton.” Many had tried and they had all failed.

Arthur and Merlin arrived at the same time as us and though Merlin wanted Arthur to try the sword first, Arthur insisted ladies first. I approached the stone hitched my purple cloak over my shoulder and grabbed Excalibur by the hilt the sword began to slip from the stone. Suddenly it went dark the sun had been put out! No one saw Merlin hit me on the back of my head with his crook! As I lay on the cold ground I heard Merlin whisper, “sorry lass t’was not meant to be” I felt my life slipping away, as the sun reignited.

The crowd were all terrified and screaming, they were huddled together in fear of their lives, after all the sun had just gone out. Their minds had been wiped of all memories of me! Morgana cursing Merlin swooped in and bore me up and away.

Arthur, who had had his mind wiped of all memory of me too stepped up to the stone and with ease he withdrew Excalibur. The rest is, as they say history or myth. Or as I would say bloody unfair!

At dead of night Morgana brought me here and buried me, weeping all the while , she never forgave Merlin.

Morgana told my story on my tomb stone! Sadly Merlin thrawted her again. He cast a spell on it so that all who gazed up it only saw the carving upsidedown. So good ladies and gentlemen if you can turn your screens or the image the other way up. You will see Merlin’s hand holding the staff he murdered me with, and the sword Excalibur waiting to be removed from the stone.

It should of been me!

For visually challenged writersthe image shows a group of mother sheep about to give birth, with one newly arrived lamb visible.

The New Arrivals – Image by KL Caley.

It had been such a long night, cold as well. Liam was exhausted, not one of the Ewes had produced a single lamb….not one had gone into labour!

“Hey sleepy head”, it was Gena, “how’s it going. Looks like you’ve had a productive night.” Liam yawned and stretched as he accepted a hot mug of coffee and a foil wrapped bacon sandwich.

“It’s been a slow night he said, not a single sign of any of the Ewes having a single lamb! ” Gena looked at him oddly… “Looks like your wrong there. What’s that,” she said motioning to the far side of the pen. “What’s that, scotch mist?”

Liam could not believe his eyes, or ears. There was Millie with baby Mollie, and the others were looking and sounding as if things were on the move.

April 1: Flash Fiction Challenge: Swift Passage.

April 1 2021, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about a swift passage. You can take inspiration from any source. Who is going where and why. What makes it swift? Go where the prompt leads!.

I wrote this in honour of Sue Vincent. You can read her beautiful blog here.

The candle flickered her spirit left. Free from earth’s tethers and life’s pain she breathed again. Across the night sky lit by stars she flashed around the planet spreading love as she went.

Alighting on her Moors, her spirit’s home. The stones welcomed her with love, they knew her worth. Cold winds could not chill her just carry her wisdom.

Behind she left us grieving, family and friends alike. Her legacy will last forever as will the hole she left in our hearts. My last email to her said “sleep well.” Sue’s passage after death was swift to bliss.
