Holocaust Rememberance Day.

Lest we ever forget or worse still deny.

Rounded up beaten into compliance
Herded onto trains, treated worse than cattle.
Sorted to the left or the right no point to defiance.
Death or slave labour, hunger a constant battle.
Shot or beaten at a soldiers whim
Deemed subhuman because you were a Jew.
The race or religion may change but it ever was and isโ€ฆ nothing is new.

It was a terrible time when those in power lost all that is good in human beings. I pray that such times will never come again.

Oh Willow. It’s so sad isn’t it. How can be humanity be so cruel?

Sadly, I don’t think humans have changed and this could happen again

They have not have they ? It’s been this way since time began or at least since man first walked the earth , it still continues and sadly it always will…. Humankind never learns. ๐Ÿ’œ

Your comment is very true. Many years ago, I was instrumental in getting a Bosnian Muslim refugee, who had been imprisoned in a concentration camp by Serb nationalists, to speak at a Holocaust commemmoration sponsored by the local council, but with a mainly Jewish audience. He spoke movingly and simply. I looked to see how the audience – mainly older Jews – was reacting. Their faces said, “It still happens”.

Yes it’s so sad you can pick any country in the world today and there will be mistreatment of humans by humans to a lesser or higher degree. Our species never learns. Thank you for relating your story. ๐Ÿ’œ

I donโ€™t understand why everyone of us does not appreciate life in all of its forms. People can be heartless. The pain and suffering from the Holocaust will last for generations and generations. Some families completely destroyed. The pain of those who escaped it is indescribable. In high school we watched a black and white film called The Night and the Fog. It was the most horrific thing I had ever seen in my young life. I will never forget and will never deny.

๐Ÿ˜ฆ I’m glad to hear my kids’ schools still cover this. It’s important we learn from history.

It should always be remembered but alas, the survivors are now few and far between.

Thereโ€™s such a lot to remember. It seems as though the people with the power to stir up more genocides and hatreds have forgotten. Or more likely donโ€™t care.

I watched an interesting fiction show on Netflix called Hunters, where a group of Jewish people hunt down Nazis. Al Pacino was in it, and I thought the acting was great.

We have to make sure the next generation doesn’t forget. My children are the grandchildren of a survivor but they don’t seem to understand it wasn’t that long ago. Very frustrating.

Hi Willow, A beautiful poem. It is so painful to think mankind did this. We can be truly great and utterly unspeakable.

We cannot forget. We cannot allow deniers to sway opinion.
