Song Lyrics Sunday, The Image Captured!

Jim Adams

It’s Sunday and time for John Adams’s Song Lyric Sunday May 29, This prompt is : Appearance, Image, Likeness, Object, Picture, Photograph.

First up Appearance and Image initially I though of Vouge by Madonna but then I thought no… Lonnie Donegan.

I was four years old in 1957 but I remember my brothers and sisters all being into Lonnie Donegan and they loved to dance to his music. Infact I can recall them improvising a skittle group! The song is very much about teenagers.. a new thing then, and them getting dressed up and made up to be in fashion!

Vernon Dalhart recorded “Puttin’ On the Style” in December 1925 and by 1926 it was a popular hit.The song was collected in the Catskills by Norman Cazden from Ernie Sagar in 1945 showing that it had entered oral tradition. Another version has also been collected from oral tradition in West Virginia.

“Puttin’ On the Style” was a 1957 hit for skiffle artist Lonnie Donegan. It was recorded live at the London Palladium and released as a double A-side along with “Gamblin’ Man” and reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in June and July 1957, where it spent two weeks in this position.[4] It was Donegan’s second consecutive No. 1 in the UK and the UK’s first double-sided chart topper.[5] It was the last UK chart-topper to be solely issued in 78rpm format, as Pye Nixa did not release it on 7″ single at the time (although it was later re-released as a 7″).

Lyrics
Sweet sixteen, goes to church just to see the boys
Laughs and screams and giggles at every little noise
Turns her face a little and turns her head awhile
But everybody knows she’s only putting on the style

That’s what all the young folks are doing all the while
And as I look around me, I’m sometimes apt to smile
Seeing all the young folks putting on the style

Young man in the hot-rod car, driving like he’s mad
With a pair of yellow gloves he’s borrowed from his dad
He makes it roar so lively just to see his girlfriend smile
But she knows he’s only putting on the style

That’s what all the young folks are doing all the while
And as I look around me, I’m sometimes apt to smile
Seeing all the young folks putting on the style

Preacher in the pulpit roars with all his might
Sing Glory Hallelula with the folks all in a fright
Now you might think he’s satan that’s coming down the aisle
But it’s only our poor preacher, boys, it’s putting on his style

That’s what all the young folks are doing all the while
And as I look around me, I’m sometimes apt to smile
Seeing all the young folks putting on the style

That’s what all the young folks are doing all the while
And as I look around me, I’m sometimes apt to smile
Seeing all the young folks putting on the style

That’s what all the young folks are doing all the while
And as I look around me, I’m sometimes apt to smile
Seeing all the young folks putting on the style

By 1966 I was thirteen and very interested in fashion and pop music… Plus my sister F. was in the fashion business and I was lucky because she was very skilled at running me up outfits .

..

Dedicated Follower of Fashion” is a 1966 song by British band the Kinks. It lampoons the contemporary British fashion scene and mod culture in general. Originally released as a single, it has been included on many of the band’s later albums.

In the mid-1960s fashion in Britain was becoming increasingly daring and outrageous, driven by the youth-oriented culture of Swinging LondonBoutiques such as Bibadesigners like Mary Quant, and the television personalities like Cathy McGowan who popularised them became celebrated as much as the entertainers who wore their mod clothes.

Fashion trends changed rapidly, and the Carnaby Street shops did a brisk business from those trying to avoid seeming out of step with the latest craze. Ray Davies saw all this and satirised the hypothetical extreme, a superficial dandy whose “clothes are loud but never square / It will make or break him so he’s got to buy the best … He thinks he is a flower to be looked at … In matters of the cloth he is as fickle as can be.”

Ray Davies claimed that the song was inspired by a fight he had with a fashion designer at a party:

I got pissed off with [a fashion designer at a party] always going on about fashion. I was just saying you don’t have to be anything; you decide what you want to be and you just walk down the street and if you’re good the world will change as you walk past. I just wanted it to be the individual who created his own fashion. … [It was] a terrible brawl. I kicked him, and I kicked his girlfriend up the arse.

Davies claims he wrote the song in one sitting, typing the lyrics out on a typewriter, with no later revision.[citation needed] It was performed with Davies mostly accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, with the rest of the band joining in on the “It will make or break him so he’s got to buy the best ’cause…” and echoing the “Oh yes he is” lines in the refrain. The song contains two lines from the 1905 English adventure novel The Scarlet Pimpernel; “they seek him here, they seek him there”.

A little aside Ray Davis was a Guest Speaker at our youngest son’s graduation which unbelievably was nearly twenty years ago.

Picture, Photo and Image.

I was nine when this song came out and again it was very popular in my childhood home. It’s a great song and I have always loved it!

..

A Picture of You” is a song by English entertainer Joe Brown. Written by John Beveridge and Peter Oakman, it was a number 2 UK hit single for Brown in the summer of 1962. Brown recorded his version at Pye Records, and the single was released as Piccadilly 7N 35047.

Although “A Picture of You” is designated as the B-side of “A Lay-About’s Lament”, it was this song which became the chart hit. The song spent nine weeks in the UK Singles Chart Top 5 (from the week of 14 June 1962 through the week of 9 August 1962) during a nineteen-week chart run. The song was placed thirteenth on the chart of overall single sales for the calendar year 1962 in the UK.

The album A Picture of You, Joe Brown’s first, was issued on Pye’s budget Golden Guinea label (the records were marketed at the price of one Guinea, or one pound and a shilling) in 1962, and entered the NME album chart at number 10 on 25 August 1962. It stayed in the top ten for the next 15 weeks. The album also included the smaller hits Shine (reached No 33 in the UK singles charts in 1961) and What A Crazy World We’re Livin’ In (reached number 37 in the UK singles charts in 1962, just prior to A Picture of You).

In the night, there are sights to be seen
Stars like Jewels on the Crown of a Queen
But the only sight I wanna view
Is that wonderful Picture of you On a Streetcar, or in the CaféAll of the evening, and most of the day
My mind is in a maze what can I do? I still see that picture of you It was last Summer, I fell in love
My heart told me what to do
I saw you there on the crest of a hill
An? I took a little picture of you Then you were gone, like a dream in the night
With you went my Heart, my Love and my Life
I didn? t know your name, what could I do? I only had a picture of you Then you were gone, like a dream in the night
With you, went my Heart, my Love and my Life
I didn? t know your name, what could I do? I only had a picture of you, oh yeah
That wonderful picture of you, I? m left with a picture of you, oh yeah
That wonderful picture of you

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE 💜💜

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS May 28, 2022.

Badge by Shelley Krupa..

Hi everyone it’s Saturday again and time for LindaGHill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday. Linda has dropped everyone a Friday reminder, except John W. Howell at Fiction Favourites who gets so much more than he ever wanted in terms of strange cartoon characters, low flying planes and weird UPS deliveries…. Lucky for the rest of us we get an email and this week it said :

‘Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “trail/trial.” Use one, use both, use them any way you’d like. Bonus points if you use both. Have fun!

© willowdot21

The trail was narrow and shady
We walked in hope and the companionship
You running on, bouncing like crazy
If speparted we would double back quick.

You are always so good, never a trial
Your loving caring ways always brings a smile.
There to protect us while we’re out on the trail
I trust you so our bond will never fail.

Now your getting older the trail is way too hard.
Your old bones ache and your enjoyment marred.
A short walk now can be such a trial for you.
So we lift you gently into the car and take you somewhere new.

You have never been a trial
We’ve loved you all the while
So we keep you out of pain
So you can dream that we are out on the trail again.

Throwback Thursday – #40 – Birthday Blasts

It’s Lauren’s turn again to pick the theme for this week’s Throwback Thursday. The brainchild Lauren and Maggie.

Plus it was Lauren’s birthday yesterday so happy birthday Lauren. So guess what her choice is this week?

Birthday Blasts.

1) What’s your earliest birthday memory?

I really don’t remember early birthdays. One of the memories I do have is being at a party and feeling scared and uncomfortable. I remember not being able to eat the food and the hosts mother thinking it was a huge laugh.

2) What was your favorite birthday and why?

Definitely when I was thirteen and my parents bought tickets for me to see the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds at the Albert Hall. Mum and Dad asked a neighbour’s son who was about eighteen to take me. That was an amazing birthday present.
Also my eighteenth birthday was great fun it was a fancy dress party and I went as a Greek Goddess

3) What’s the best birthday present you have ever received?

The trip to see the Stones and the Yardbirds. Though my eldest son was born a week after my 20th birthday that was a beautiful belated gift.

4) Did you ever get money as a birthday gift?

Aunts used to give us one of two pounds if we were lucky.

5) What did you like to do on your birthday as a kid?

Usually we used to have friends round to tea. Jelly ice-cream cakes and balloons.
What do you like to do now?
See the grandchildren, have a day out with the family 💜

6) Did you have birthday parties with friends or family parties.

When I was younger it was both family and friends. Then as I got older just friends.

7) Did you get to pick the food for your birthday?

Not until I was a lot older.
Did you prefer to eat a home cooked meal or to eat out at a restaurant on your birthday?
Both ways suited me fine.

8) Did your family have any fun birthday traditions?

No

Did you continue those traditions with your own kids?

No

9) Did you ever get to take the day off school on your birthday?

No

As an adult did/do you take the day off?

No

10) Have you ever had a surprise birthday party?

No

Was it a real surprise, or did you know it was coming?
No because I never had one😂😂😂😂. I have arranged a few in my time!

Bonus Question:
If you had a million dollars to spend only on your next birthday, what would you do?

I would take all my friends on an all inclusive fortnight holiday in Antigua if any money was left I’d give it to charity..

thats it for now folks.

After last week’s double jump, the second unplanned and to an alternative reality and a run in with the talking Swans Morgarna is back to earth with a bang. There is trouble with the Anomaly and she and Merlin must sort that out. After the quickest of turnrounds Morgarna is off again. Well it doesn’t take long for our girl Morgs to be in the thick of danger again!

The silence of the lab was shattered by a loud thud as Morgana landed on the floor a stream of angry expletives pouring from her deceivingly innocent looking mouth!
“Who , what when?” A startled Merlin asked… looking around from the experiment he was conducting. Morgarna filled him in on her jump before last not bringing her home but into an alternative reality where all creatures spoke and humans didn’t and were definitely not in charge. Merlin was quite interested until she mentioned a swan named Geoff with very definite opinions on her habbits. “No, Morgarna I’m not swallowing that you’re taking the Mick?”
“I’m not” Morgana replied “I was bloody there you weren’t “
Merlin could see she was not in the best of moods so backed off and poured her a Bacardi and Coke and handed it to her as she lit a cigarette. “I’ll run you a bath Morgs you wiff a tad then I will prepare a meal…” Morgarna interrupted him mid sentence “You’d smell if you’d been through what I have. Soaked and cold! … I’ll run my own bath and let’s have Mexican tonight I need warming up! “
Snatching her drink out of Merlin’s hand she headed off to the bathroom leaving a trail of smoke rings behind her!

The next morning over breakfast Merlin and Morgarna discussed the fact that the anomaly had gone rogue a few times in a year whereas in several hundred previous years no jump had ever been off the scale?
“It makes me think, Morges that something is messing with us and for now it’s very random but we honestly don’t want it to get any worse do we?”
“Certainly not these double jumps are exhausting and that last one was really odd. Any ideas about what’s causing the rogue jumps.”
Morgarna stretched and lit a cigar
.. Merlin pulled a face and said, “where did you get that from” Morgarna winked and replied “I liberated a box from Sir Percival Devereau, he’s not going to need them in prison, is he? “
Merlin stood up and opened the window letting in some fresh air and smoke out!
Turning to face Morgana he continued, “there have been some unusual blips on the computer though I have not payed much attention to them but last night I sat up and collated them all and this is what I found! Pulling up the screen on his tablet Merlin showed Morgarna a a wooded area , look closer can you see those purple ripples, well I followed them and they are, always there on the occasions of rogue jumps right there!”.
Morgarna joined Merlin to look at the screen and sure enough there were purple ripples exactly where the rouge jumps occurred.
“Where is this place Merls?” Morgarna asked “and when are we going to investigate?”
“It’s up north Hun, but it’s not we it is just you I need to be here keeping things going. “
“Yet right of course you do and it is always me doing the donkey work!” Snapped Morgarna her cigar firmly clamped in her teeth! “
“You can take my beema” Merlin said dangling the keys in front of her.
“I’ve packed your bag for you” he added quietly.
Snatching her bag and keys Morgarna set off trailing a strange mixture of Paloma Picasso and Havanna cigar as she went. Her long black cloak and black Doc Martin’s looking fetching and aggressive at the same time.

As she drove off Merlin called after her “no smoking in the car” regretting the words the second they left his mouth.
Morgarna’s eyes flashed and she smiled as she shouted, “Oops! Sorry as she stubbed her cigar out on the pristine dashboard, waving through the sun roof she sped off.
“Oh! ouch” winched Merlin, “I’d would have been better off saying nothing!” He turned on his heels and went back into the lab to take a pill …. He had a migraine coming on!

Morgarna sped along windows open Sam Ryder blaring out breaking every speed camera as she passed!

It was about 5pm when the special satnav Merlin had designed for her, brought her to a quiet carpark in the middle of nowhere. Getting out of the car Morgarna lit a cigarette and got her stuff together.

Well – Image by KL Caley.

After half an hour’s walk through a little wood she found a path amongst some foliage leading to a pyramid-shaped building.
A stone building with a pyramid type roof that had a strange gleam to it. Quietly she approached the doorway and entered the building, she stubbed her cigarette out just before entering. Once inside it became clear that this was a covered well.
As her eyes ajusted to the dark she heard a door behind her open. The warm air and hum of computers and mechinary grew loud . Morgarna swung round to come face to face with a tall dark figure . “At last, one of you came…..”

Yesterday, Nineteen young children and two adults died in a shooting at a primary school in south Texas.

Watch the wall.

Watch the wall my darlings as the gunman passes by,
Hush now everyone or he will double back and kill us if he hears you cry.

He doesn’t care that guns are not allowed
I know he will not stop to think before firing into a crowd.

Try not to whimper as he will hear that too
He has shot your little friends for less and he will do the same to you.

Here, cuddled up to me my darlings lets all play sleeping lions
Keep calm or become more satistics in this crime.
Yes those are your friends my darlings but we cannot help them now.
You are in my care here and to keep you safe I vow .

Who is he is my darlings I have no idea,
We need not think of him, he is of no consequence my dear.
What is important is that you stay with me here.
Silent as a mouse, no noise for him to hear.

Oh! yes. Watch the wall my darlings as the gunman passes by,
Hush now everyone, he will double back and kill us if he hears you cry.

I wote this poem in November 2012 after the school Massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. There have been more massacres since and not only in schools, places of worship, supermarkets, concerts. Nothing has changed nothing has been done… WHY? There have been so many of these incidents in the intervening years that now Gun Shootings in schools cause more children’s deaths than any other reason in America .

The media should not give the murders any air time they should should not be named . This only encourages the next mad man or woman to out do them. Gun laws need to be stricter and no one needs a gun in their home. Mental health needs to have more funds pumped into it so these people can be found and treated before they cause such grief.

Let us not forget the forgotten victims these shootings, all the murder’s families.

How have we come to this, Children killing Children?

Colleen Chesebro’s Tuesday Tanka.

Here we are for another #TankaTuesday poetry challenge! Colleen asks “Are you ready for a theme prompt? Kerfe selected this month’s theme:”

This month’s theme is:

“Useful”

Yesterday and today I’ve hit a wall. At first I was worried but then I decided why worry as my father always said worry is not useful it is a waste of time and energy because it changes nothing. So I have written a three verse Abhanga. I know it’s not good but I used my brain and at least I tried. Better to try and fail than not to try at all. Thank you Dad.

What’s Useful

Eyes do more than just see
They’re windows to the soul
Some devour you whole
Eyes are useful

Hands can hold a baby
They help when there is need
Some give, some full of greed
Hands are useful.

Brains make our bodies work
They help us live out life
We choose success or strife
Brains are useful.

Jim Adams

Good morning it’s time for Jim Adam’s Song Lyric Sunday this week our prompt for May 22, 2022 – Money, Gold, Silver, Rich suggested by Paula of Light Motifs II.

First up Paloma Faith …Oh! I don’t know much about this song apart from the fact I really love it and I love Paloma, I would also love to be her in the video! The tune is just so catching. Great song great video . I love catchy songs .

Paloma Faith
Paloma Faith (born Paloma Faith Blomfield; 21 July 1981) is a British singer-songwriter and actress.
In 2009, she released her debut single “Stone Cold Sober”, then her debut album, Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful?, which was certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry. The album has spawned three singles: “Stone Cold Sober”, ” New York”, and the title track ” Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful?”. The fourth official single, entitled “Upside Down”, was released in the UK on March 15, 2010.

Oh, I don’t care, I gotta celebrate the moment
Gotta own it before it blows away, blows away
Oh, beat my snare, I got a burning in my heart when it’s dark
Can you feel the flame, feel the flame

But there’s a part of me
That used to go and hide in peace
But now I’m touching the ceiling
I’ve found something to believe in
And now all I see, so many possibilities
But now I’m touching the ceiling
I’ve found something to believe in

But oh, I got a feeling that tonight is on my side
(I got it, I got it, I’m gold, I’m shining so bright, yeah I’m gold)
Oh, I got a feeling that I’m gonna be alright
(I got it, I got it, I’m gold, I’m shining so bright, yeah I’m gold)
There’s nothing better than to hear the sound, hear the sound
The sound of thunder when I hit the ground
Oh, I got a feeling that tonight is on my side
(I got it, I got it, I’m gold, I’m shining so bright, yeah I’m gold)

Step by step, I got power in the way that I walk
And I’m here to stay, here to stay
And I feel so high, like a rocket in the sky
And I got nothing in my way, in my way

I’ve got a feeling, I’m shining gold (I’m shining gold)
I’ve got a feeling (I’ve got a feeling)
I’m shining gold (I’m shining gold)
Oh, I got a feeling that tonight is on my side (I’m shining gold)
I’m shining gold
Oh, I got a feeling that I’m gonna be alright
(I got it, I got it, I’m gold, I’m shining so bright, yeah I’m gold)

There’s nothing better than to hear the sound, hear the sound
The sound of thunder when I hit the ground
Oh, I got a feeling that tonight is on my side

Next up Silver Lining by Mt. Joy. just a fantastic song .

.

Up on the mountain
Caught on the rail line
Up on the mountain
Caught on the rail line

My brother, let the heart just eat
Drink your wine, smoke your weed
My brother, let the heart still beat

And wear your silver lining
Wear it close to your skin

But if it’s the drugs, the women, the wine, the weed
The love that took everything I own
Just take it oh oh oh
And tell the ones you love you love them
And teach only what you know, and oh
You better know it well

We drove from coast to coast
Down in New Orleans
Where the levees broke

You were tripping
I was driving
You were running
I was hiding
And you know I know how that feels
Don’t get cheated kid
Just sweep from your heels
And if you get carried away
Let the music play you through the pain

And wear that silver lining
Wear it close to your skin

But if it’s the drugs, the women, the wine, the weed
The love that took everything I own
Just take it oh oh oh
And tell the ones you love you love them
Teach only what you know, and oh
You better know it well

Up on the mountain
Caught on the red light
Up on the mountain
Caught on the rail line

Silver Lining lyrics © Mt. Joy Publishing.

Mt. Joy have debuted their new song “Silver Lining,” an attempt by guitarist/vocalist Matt Quinn to find some solace after tragedy — in this case, the friends in his community lost too young to drugs, and the devastation they left behind. It’s a compellingly open-hearted piece of songwriting that exemplifies why Mt. Joy have found such a passionate following in little more than a year as a band.

Mt. Joy is a five-piece indie rock band based in Los Angeles with roots in Philadelphia. They consist of members Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar), Sam Cooper (guitar), Sotiris Eliopoulos (drums), Jackie Miclau (keyboards), and Michael Byrnes (bass). The band debuted in 2016 with their single “Astrovan”, recorded in Los Angeles by Quinn, Cooper, and Byrnes. This was followed up in 2017 by the trio of singles “Sheep”, “Cardinal”, and “Silver Lining”, with “Silver Lining” eventually charting at the top spot of the BillboardTriple A charts. On March 2, 2018, they released their debut eponymous studio album. Between the next two years, Mt. Joy performed at festivals and on tour as support acts, as well as headlining a North American and European tour. After a tour with The Lumineers was cut short due to COVID-19, Mt. Joy released their second studio album, Rearrange Us on June 5, 2020.[

Their third studio album, Orange Blood, is set to release on June 17, 2022.

Last up is Rich from Maren Morris. I like this song because it’s simply fun and easy listening and fun lyrics!

.

Rich” is a song recorded by American country music singer Maren Morris for her major-label debut album, Hero (2016). Morris co-wrote the song with Jessie Jo Dillon and Laura Veltz, and co-produced the track with busbee. It was released to American country radio on February 12, 2018 through Columbia Nashville as the album’s fourth and final single.

“Rich” blends elements of country music with reggae and hip hop for a sound that “transcends classification.” The song features “laid-back, breezy” vocals in the verses and a “singalong” chorus. Lyrically, the song details ways that a man has done Morris wrong, framed by hypothetical dollar values for these infractions that would result in Morris being rich. According to critics, Morris’s delivery expresses “hip-hop bravado” and a “sly wit” as she toys with unconventional rhymes.

Happy Sunday Everyone 💜.
