Today ten years after I originally wrote this poem, the reluctant poet read my poem The warrior within. I originally wrote this poem in 2012 when I was on the road to recovery after breaking my back for the second time! I visited that post and I have rewritten it here. Thanks to the reluctant poet for reminding me of those hard day’s.
THE WARRIOR WITHIN.
I shall not run I shall not hide,
I’ll face the void with eyes open wide.
I shall call up my warrior from within
And hone my sword, the battle to begin.
If I must make sense of what is my worth.
I shall do it now and justify my birth..
Each time the void comes for me
I make the mistake of trying to flee.
Why do this time after time, the path is futile
I end up broken, spent and feeling vile.
I shall not flinch this time. I will win
I will answer for every sin.
I see the void approaching swirling round,
My lies and fears creep towards me on the ground.
I start to shake terror grips my insides,
I call up my inner warrior from whence she hides.
With flaming hair of my youth and body strong and straight
She takes on the terrors sending them to hell’s gate.
From deep inside I find the strength , that others knew I owned,
Sword in hand my bravery returns , refined and truly honed.
I see you disillusion, I see you hopelessness, I see you despair.
I face you now as a warrier you need to take care.

LYRICS
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago Turned around backwards so the windshield shows Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse Still, it’s so much clearer I forgot my shirt at the water’s edge The moon is low tonight
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night I’m not sure all these people understand It’s not like years ago The fear of getting caught Of recklessness and water They cannot see me naked These things, they go away Replaced by everyday
Nightswimming, remembering that night September’s coming soon I’m pining for the moon And what if there were two Side by side in orbit Around the fairest sun? That bright, tight forever drum Could not describe nightswimming
You, I thought I knew you You I cannot judge You, I thought you knew me This one laughing quietly underneath my breath Nightswimming
The photograph reflects, every streetlight a reminder Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night
“Nightswimming” is a song by American alternative rock band R.E.M. It was released in 1993 as the fifth single from the group’s eighth album Automatic for the People (1992). “Nightswimming” is a ballad featuring singer Michael Stipe accompanied only by bassist Mike Mills on piano (lyrics and music respectively, but credited to the whole band as usual), a string arrangement by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, and a prominent oboe by Deborah Workman in the latter part of the piece. Stipe sings about a group of friends who go skinny dipping at night, which draws from similar experiences in the band’s early days.
Bassist Mike Mills recalled he was playing a piano riff at John Keane’s studio in the band’s hometown of Athens, Georgia. While Mills almost discarded the melody, it attracted the interest of singer Michael Stipe. Mills said, “I never thought it would amount to much because it was just a circular thing that kept going round and round and round. But it inspired Michael.” While the song was not included on Out of Time, the demo recorded during those sessions was used for Automatic for the People, with a string arrangement by John Paul Jones added to the track. Mills has also claimed he recorded the piano part at Criteria Studios in Miami, on the same piano used by Derek and the Dominos on the recording of “Layla”.
“[Michael] listened once, nodded his head to hear it again, and on the second pass he sang the lyrics. It was ‘Nightswimming,’ exactly like the record we would record a year later,” explained Peter Buck in 2003. “I was standing in the corner, dumbfounded.”
Next up The Escape song from Rupert Holmes. Back in 1979 I had the two older lads they were seox and four. I didn’t drive, so it was a long walk to get anywhere and hubby was working away more than he was home. I had a lot on my shoulders but I coped. I fell in love with not only the song but the idea of it! The word beach is not actually in the lyrics but there is the line “Making love in the dunes at the Cape” I reckon dunes are as near as it gets to beach!
“Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” is a song written and recorded by British-born American singer Rupert Holmes for his album Partners in Crime. As the lead single for the album, the pop song was recommended by Billboard for radio broadcasters on September 29, 1979, then added to prominent US radio playlists in October–November. Rising in popularity, the song peaked at the end of December to become the final US number one song of the 1970s.
Recorded for Holmes’s Partners in Crime (1979) album, the song came from an unused track for which Holmes wrote temporary or “dummy” lyrics. This version, “The Law of The Jungle”, was released as part of his Cast of Characters (2005) box set and was inspired by a want-ad he read whilst idly scanning the personals one day. As Holmes put it, “I thought, ‘what would happen to me if I answered this ad?’ I’d go and see if it was my own wife who was bored with me.” The title of the song was originally going to be “People Need Other People”, and was later to be revealed that it was a true story.
The chorus originally started with “If you like Humphrey Bogart“, which Holmes changed at the last minute, replacing the actor with the name of the first exotic cocktail that came to mind and fit the music.
The original lyrics said, “If you like Humphrey Bogart and getting caught in the rain.”… As I was getting on mic I thought to myself, I’ve done so many movie references to Bogart and wide-screen cinema on my earlier albums, maybe I shouldn’t do one here. I thought, What can I substitute? Well, this woman wants an escape, like she wants to go on vacation to the islands. When you go on vacation to the islands, when you sit on the beach and someone asks you if you’d like a drink, you never order a Budweiser, you don’t have a beer. You’re on vacation, you want a drink in a hollowed-out pineapple with the flags of all nations and a parasol. If the drink is blue you’d be very happy. And a long straw. I thought, What are those escape drinks? Let’s see, there’s daiquiri, mai tai, piña colada… I wonder what a piña colada tastes like? I’ve never even had one. I thought that instead of singing, “If you like Humphrey Bogart,” with the emphasis on like, I could start it a syllable earlier and go, “If you like piña-a coladas.”
