Maggie, said :Surprise, surprise! It’s me, pinch hitting for Lauren this week so she could attend a few appointments today. She will be back next Thursday tackling the first of our abbreviated prompts for the month of April.
This week’s prompt is: Report cards and Progress Reports.
You can use the questions that follow to spark your memories or you can answer them as they stand. It is totally up to you.
Looking back now, would you say you were a good, fair, or struggling student?
I was never a good student, or so I was repeatedly told. I believe I did my best but was made to feel I was stupid.
How often were your school efforts reported to your parents?
Constantly or so it seemed.
Did you receive letter grades, i.e. A, B, C, etc?
Yes but I was usually at the lower end of the marks.
Was your behavior reported on your progress reports or report cards?
We had report cards.
In what subjects did you excel and which subjects were a challenge?
I felt I was good at English, Geography, drama. I was not much cop at Maths, or the sciences or gymnastics.
Did you ever try to change your grade? Turning a C into a B for example?
Yes I always tried.
Did you keep any of your report cards?
No.
Did you get rewarded for good grades?
We’d get a word of faint praise for good behaviour.
Punished for ‘bad’ grades?
Yes they’d wipe the floor with us .
Did the subjects you excelled in prove to be where you excelled in life?
As I said I enjoyed English, and I love poetry and to read and write stories.
What was your biggest detraction from your school work?
Lack of self belief.

Willow, so many children were degraded over report cards and it is a shame. Each of us learns in a different way. The schools are not always staffed to handle such diverse learning needs. I am sorry school was so hard for you. Just look at you now! ❤️

I do now Maggie, I think maybe I should avoid posts about school and education because it all looks so negative. Then I think maybe what I say could help someone. So honesty however much it hurts and yes it’s all behind me now 😊💜💜

I find writing about difficult times rather cathartic. I do think your experiences help others who have children or grandchildren in school. You must do what feels right for you, though. I always appreciate your posts.

Thank you Maggie , I don’t like to dwell too much on those times…. But in a way they made me who I am💜

Mine always said I talked too much…
Mar 31, 2022 @ 20:52:33
Well , no , I can’t believe that 💜💜😊

Your response to what happened when you got bad grades sticks in my mind: “Yes they’d wipe the floor with us .” This response is evidence you did excel in English. I am also glad those years are behind me.

Yes indeed we have survived despite of them and we are stronger for it. Thank you so much for your kind words 💜💜💜

Thanks for joining in Willow. It is sad that anyone should be made to feel that they are stupid. Everyone has different strengths. If my entire intelligence was based on my music ability, I would need to be fitted with a safety helmet. LOL

Lol well there is no doubt that you made a wonderful teacher.🤣

Thanks Willow

I do believe things are very different now and for that I am very pleased. There were some issues with our lads but I believe things are better for our grandchildren. 💜💜
Apr 01, 2022 @ 18:40:17
Some things are still bad for my grandchildren in school. It makes me very angry.
Apr 01, 2022 @ 18:59:05
Yes it really sad isn’t it , I really do sympathize 💜💜

Things have changed in schools here at least. Note instead of criticizing, they praise the strong points. Makes kids less afraid to take on difficult subjects
Apr 01, 2022 @ 05:16:13
That’s definitely a change for the better💜
Apr 01, 2022 @ 05:24:43
Indeed.
