Hi its Sunday again and our gallant host Jim Adams would like songs about or mentioning musical instruments! So here we go it’s Song Lyric Sunday.
“You Play Glockenspiel, I’ll Play Drums” is track 11 on the album and the most I can find written about it is, “odd”. Personally I like it because like all their songs it has a story and I love stories. To me it’s about a boy and girl meeting up and bigging up who and what they are! …just my opinion you may see something different there , that the beauty of Beautiful South Lyrics they are open to interpretation.
0898 Beautiful South, also referred to as 0898, is the third studio album by English band The Beautiful South. After the success of their previous work over 1989–1991, the band hired prolific record producer Jon Kelly and recorded the album at AIR Studios in London. The album contains a more “muscular” yet sometimes more sombre sound than their previous albums, although still entirely retains lyricist Paul Heaton‘s witty and bitter lyrical style. The album “deals in fragile melodies and harmonies, soulful but low-key instrumentation, and lyrics full of subtle social commentary and humour.”The album title refers to the 0898 premium rate dialling code associated with sex hotlines in the UK at the time.
The Lyrics
There’s a boy with a brace across his teeth
White socks, tattooed underneath
Bus tickets chitched up in his palm
Stood there he’s spinning a yarn
There’s a girl with a plastic pair of shoes
Two eyes permanently bruised
Can’t find the time to be alarmed
Just stood spinning a yarn
Just take your time
It’ll work out fine
It’ll do no harm
To spin your yarn
You do English
I’ll do sums
You break fingers
I’ll break thumbs
You play Dads
And I’ll play Mums
You play glockenspiel
And I’ll play drums
My name is Derek from then den
I deal in shillings and in pence
I’ll get you any deal you like
Ten sweets for a mountain bike you like
My name is Mandy from the yard
I deal in crazy tarot cards
I’ll tell you what the future brings
One cat and a dog that sings
You do English
I’ll do sums
You break fingers
I’ll break thumbs
You play Dads
And I’ll play Mums
You play glockenspiel
And I’ll play drums
Just take your time
It’ll work out fine
It’ll do no harm
To spin your yarn
You do English
I’ll do sums
You break fingers
I’ll break thumbs
You play Dads
And I’ll play Mums
You play glockenspiel
And I’ll play drums

Back in 1969 I had met my future hubby, I was very much in to the psychedelic music seen …working in a boutique where this type of music was all the rage 💜
“Green Tambourine” is a song written and composed by Paul Leka (who also produced it) and Shelley Pinz. It was the biggest hit by the 1960s Ohio-based rock group the Lemon Pipers, as well as the title track of their debut album, Green Tambourine. The song was one of the first psychedelic pop chart-toppers and became a gold record.
Drop your silver in my tambourine Help a poor man fill his pretty dream Give me pennies, I'll take anything Now listen while I play My green tambourine Watch the jingle jangle start to chime Reflections of the music that is mine When you toss a coin you'll hear it sing Now listen while I play My green tambourine Drop a dime before I walk away Any song you want I'll gladly play Money feeds my music machine Now listen while I play My green tambourine. Listen while I play... Lyric source. *******.
And to round off The Devil goes down to Georgia by Nickelback… I apologize now to those who love a more original version but man/woman you got to love this one….I do
Nickelback is a Canadian rock band formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta. It is composed of guitarist and lead vocalist Chad Kroeger, guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger, and drummer Daniel Adair. It went through several drummer changes between 1995 and 2005, achieving its current lineup when Adair replaced Ryan Vikedal.
But I also love the original about the fiddler and the devil!
“The Devil Went Down to Georgia” is a song written and performed by the Charlie Daniels Band and released on their 1979 album Million Mile Reflections.
The song is written in the key of D minor. Vassar Clements originally wrote the basic melody an octave lower, in a tune called “Lonesome Fiddle Blues” released on Clements’ self-titled 1975 album on which Charlie Daniels played guitar. The Charlie Daniels Band moved it up an octave and put words to it. The song’s verses are closer to being spoken rather than sung (i.e., recitation), and tell the story of a young man named Johnny, in a variant on the classic deal with the Devil. The performances of the Devil and Johnny are played as instrumental bridges. The song was the band’s biggest hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100, prevented from further chart movement by “After The Love Has Gone” by Earth, Wind and Fire and “My Sharona” by The Knack.
The devil went down to Georgia, he was lookin’ for a soul to steal
He was in a bind ’cause he was way behind
And he was willin’ to make a deal
When he came across this young man sawin’ on a fiddle and playin’ it hot
And the devil jumped up on a hickory stump
And said, “boy, let me tell you what”
“I guess you didn’t know it but I’m a fiddle player too
And if you’d care to take a dare, I’ll make a bet with you
Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy
But give the devil his due
I’ll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul
‘Cause I think I’m better than you”
The boy said, “my name’s Johnny and it might be a sin
But I’ll take your bet, you’re gonna regret
‘Cause I’m the best there’s ever been”
Johnny, rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard
‘Cause Hell’s broke loose in Georgia, and the devil deals the cards
And if you win, you get this shiny fiddle made of gold
But if you lose, the devil gets your soul
The devil opened up his case and he said, “I’ll start this show”
And fire flew from his fingertips as he rosined up his bow
And he pulled the bow across the strings
And it made a evil hiss
Then a band of demons joined in
And it sounded something like this
When the devil finished, Johnny said, “well, you’re pretty good, ol’ son
But sit down in that chair right there
And let me show you how it’s done”
“Fire on the Mountain” run boys, run
The devil’s in the House of the Rising Sun
Chicken in a bread pan pickin’ out dough
Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no
The devil bowed his head because he knew that he’d been beat
And he laid that golden fiddle on the ground at Johnny’s feet
Johnny said, “Devil, just come on back if you ever wanna try again
I done told you once you son of a bitch, I’m the best that’s ever been”
He played “Fire on the Mountain” run boys, run
The devil’s in the House of the Rising Sun
The chicken in a bread pan pickin’ out dough
Granny, will your dog bite? No child, no
