Song Lyric Sunday: Who let the beasts out?

Jim Adams

This week Jim Adams our host for Song Lyric Sunday has joined forces with Paula of Light Motifs II . Paula has come up with the prompt – Lion, Tiger, Bear, Eagle, Shark.

Well there are so many to choose from but one that springs to mind is a twofa-one by Jazmine Sullivan, Lions, Tigers and Bears. Now it’s not my usual type of song but I do like it.

Lions, Tigers & Bears” is the fourth single released from American R&Bsoul singer Jazmine Sullivan‘s debut album Fearless. The song impacted radio on November 11, 2008, and was officially released on December 16, 2008 as the third single. The track received a Grammy Nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and a nomination for Best R&B Song.

Jazmine Marie Sullivan (born April 9, 1987) is an American singer-songwriter. Born and raised in PhiladelphiaPennsylvania, her debut album, Fearless, was released in 2008 to commercial and critical success. The record topped Billboard‘s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It spawned four singles, including “Need U Bad” and “Bust Your Windows“, both of which peaked in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the former of which became Sullivan’s first and only number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

“Lions, Tigers and Bears” uses a sample from Salaam Remi’s “Shila’s Playground”. It was written by Sullivan and Remi. The song is a soulful melody, written in Dorian Mode, about love and heartbreak using instrumentation of a violin. The protagonist states that she’s not scared of things most people fear, such as facing carnivorous animals, but she’s scared to love because of potential heartbreak. Sullivan said that, “the lions, tigers and bears reference represents my career in the music business.”

The phrase “Lions, tigers and bears” comes from a passage spoken by the Tin ManDorothy, and the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz.

“Lions, Tigers & Bears”

I’m not scared of lions and tigers and bears
No, I’m not
But I’m scared of loving you
I’m not scared to perform at a sold-out affair
That’s right
But I’m scared of loving you

Am I the only one who thinks it’s an impossible task?
Why it don’t last?
Is that too much to ask?
Why do we love Love, when Love seems to hate us?

Sorry if I sound so filled with gloom
You say you care, and I know you do
But this is from my experience
And my conclusion only makes sense

Just ’cause I love you, and you love me
It doesn’t mean that we’re meant to be
I can climb mountains, swim ‘cross the seas
But the most frightening thing is you and me

I’m not scared of lions and tigers and bears
No, I’m not
But I’m scared of loving you
I’m not scared to perform at a sold-out affair
That’s right
But I’m scared of loving you

Am I the only one who thinks it’s an impossible task?
Why it don’t last?
Is that too much to ask?
Why do we love Love, when Love seems to hate us?

Most circumstances, I know my fate
But in this love thing, I don’t get the game
Why does it feel like those who give in
They only wind up losing a friend

Just ’cause I love you and you love me
It doesn’t mean that we’ll ever be
Fly ‘cross the ocean, sing for the queen
But the most frightening thing is you and me

I’m not scared of lions and tigers and bears
No, I’m not
But I’m scared of loving you
I’m not scared to perform at a sold-out affair
That’s right
But I’m scared of loving you

Am I the only one who thinks it’s an impossible task?
Why it don’t last?
Is that too much to ask?
Why do we love Love, when Love seems to hate us?

I’m not sure. No, I’m not sure
But if we never try, we’ll never know
It’s better to have loved than not to love at all
Not trying is worse than to stumble and fall

And if we do
I’d rather it be with you
‘Cause at least there will be sweet memories
Oh, I’m not scared

I’m not scared of lions and tigers and bears
No, I’m not
But I’m scared of loving you
I’m not scared to perform at a sold-out affair
That’s right
But I’m scared of loving you

Am I the only one who thinks it’s an impossible task?
Why it don’t last?
Is that too much to ask?
Why do we love Love, when Love seems to hate us?

Now this next song takes me back to when I was recovering from breaking my back the second time. I discovered Fine Frenzy and just fell in love with her words and music .

Female, wife, full time mother and Grandmother. I am not as happy go lucky as I used to be but I am still bubbling along on simmer! I have three handsome sons all grown and flown. The youngest married with a beautiful wife and two sons of his own. Back in 2010 I was working, running a home, driving and socializing then bang in a split second all that was gone. I had an accident at home. I broke my back, not for the first time, I had broken it 10 years previously as well. Unfortunately this time I had broken it really badly and it was truly messed up so I had to have two operations. I was told before each operation that the outcome could mean I spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. Still as some guy once wrote "I am still standing " yes "better than I ever was " I no longer use the walking stick . I had lots of friends before the accident but when things like this happen, you loose most of them. Their lives move on and mine stood still and so they left me behind ...I know that is just the way life is but it hurt and always will. Then I looked around and saw those who were still there for me, these friends are the roses in my garden they need to be tended well. They are the diamonds in the dust. I will of been married 53yrs this comming year. I have found different ways to approach life, use my pain befriend it almost...yer right , well that is what they tell me at the pain clinic ROFLMAO ...... if only I could! I have found an outlet for my fears, frustrations and night terrors . I have started writing poetry if that name can be applied to my writing. I hope I do not come over as a moaning winger. I hope I am past all that. I also hope that you might see how the poetry is moving from very dark through the grey and hopefully in to light. My back is no longer straight it is C shaped because of the injury and I have lost two and a half inches in height but my Pilates and Core teachers have helped me to stand up as straight and be as strong as possible. Pain and depression are still hanging on my arm but I have weapons to use against them and if I say so myself I cope well. I have made lots of new friends, real diamonds. I am also very grateful for all the support and help I have encountered here on Wordpress. Hugs and welcome to everyone who visits.

      1. I meant Jazmine. That’s exactly the kind of music I listened to in the nineties 😊

  1. I am always surprised by your efforts of finding wonderful music Willow. I really like Alison Sudol or Fine Frenzy’s voice. The Chares Szabo song was lovely also.

  2. Wow! I love these, and I’d never have heard them if I hadn’t popped in. The first one reminds me a bit of some of Diana Ross’s old stuff–I used to sing along with her “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” on the radio.

And I had no idea that Alison Sudol was musical in addition to being an actress. Very cool about the Greenpeace ambassadorship–I’ve always loved that charity.

But my fave was the last. It reminded me a bit (in concept, not style) of the Kittyman. You’ve probably already heard it (it was quite popular a few months back), but just in case you haven’t, here’s a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN3wEdK_vxw.

And happy Sunday back at ya. : )

    1. Well then Cathleen I am so pleased that you did drop in then. The Jazmine song is not my usual type of song but there is something about that track that draws me in. I am that annoying person who never really like the Supremes or a lot of Motown…..eeek! That said there is a lot I love!

As for Alison Sudol, I only knew her as a musician and for her ambassadorship so when I really read up on her I was surprised….so much talent.

As for sea shanties I do love them. I know and love the kittyman version here is my favourite of the original.

Hope you had a good Sunday, ours was quiet and cold 🎶

      1. How fun! Do you know, I had no idea that the Kittyman was a direct parody of a particular song–I’d thought it was just an example of silliness and playing around with the sea shanty form. I liked The Wellerman a lot, and I can totally see how people would look forward to a ship docking that would bring them all the luxuries that make living more fun, in their words ” sugar and tea and rum.” It’s one of those pieces that gives you a window into how life used to be. Thanks, Willow, and I hope your check-up went well. : )

      2. It did thank you I am all good for now ☺️, I do love the sea shanties because they tell a story and it’s like a history lesson. 💜

      1. I passed with flying colours, blood pressure okay, blood taken, urine okay BMI okay at 21 and weight good too! 😄😄😄😂
