This is part of Song Lyric Sunday.

Well this week we have the prompt for August 29, 2021 – Fraud, Hypocrite, Phony, Pretender, Snob suggested by Angie Trafford.

Well the first song to came to mind was The great pretender, by Freddie Mercury. “The Great Pretender” is a popular song recorded by The Platters, with Tony Williams on lead vocals, and released as a single in November 1955. The words and music were written by Buck Ram,[1] The song has been covered by a number of singers, most notably by Freddie Mercury, whose version reached No. 4 on the UK charts. Sam Cooke‘s cover of the song is believed to have inspired Chrissie Hynde to name her band The Pretenders. The Platters’ manager and producer who was a successful songwriter before moving into producing and management. The song reached No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top 100, and No. 5 on the UK charts.

The song was repopularized in 1987 by Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band Queen. Mercury’s version reached No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart. In one of his last videotaped interviews in spring of 1987, Mercury explained that the song was particularly fitting for the way he saw his career and being on stage.[14]

Mercury’s music video for the song featured him parodying himself in many of his Queen guises through video medium over the years, including visual re-takes of “Radio Ga Ga“, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love“, “It’s a Hard Life“, “I Want to Break Free“, “Bohemian Rhapsody“, “One Vision“, and “I Was Born to Love You“. It was directed by David Mallet in February 1987, and also featured fellow Queen member Roger Taylor and actor Peter Straker in drag. The video was also notable for Mercury having shaved off his trademark moustache, which he had sported for much of the 1980s.

Oh yes I’m the great pretender (ooh ooh)
Pretending I’m doing well (ooh ooh)
My need is such I pretend too much
I’m lonely but no one can tellOh yes I’m the great pretender (ooh ooh)
Adrift in a world of my own (ooh ooh)
I play the game but to my real shame
You’ve left me to dream all aloneToo real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can’t concealOoh ooh yes I’m the great pretender (ooh ooh)
Just laughing and gay like a clown (ooh ooh)
I seem to be what I’m not (you see)
I’m wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you’re still aroundYeah ooh hoo
Too real when I feel what my heart can’t concealOh yes I’m the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown (ooh ooh)
I seem to be what I’m not you see
I’m wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you’re
Pretending that you’re still aroundSource: LyricFind

Robert Nesta MarleyOM (6 February 1945 – 11 May 1981) was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, and musician. Considered one of the pioneers of reggae, his musical career was marked by fusing elements of reggae, ska, and rocksteady, as well as his distinctive vocal and songwriting style. Marley’s contributions to music increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide, and made him a global figure in popular culture for over a decade. Over the course of his career, Marley became known as a Rastafari icon, and he infused his music with a sense of spirituality. He is also considered a global symbol of Jamaican music and culture and identity, and was controversial in his outspoken support for democratic social reforms. He passed away at Cedars Medical Center (now known as the University of Miami Hospital) at the age of 36 of a rare form of melanoma cancer 5 years after surviving a 2 bullet assassination attempt in his home. He also supported legalization of marijuana, and advocated for Pan-Africanism.

Soon as I wake up keep an eye out for the snakes, yeah’Cause I don’t need no, fraud
I don’t no, drama when you call
I don’t need no, lies
Pick a side, pick a side
I took the price, and lift that bitch up
I took the ice, let me lift my wrist up
I took the price, and lift that bitch up
I took the ice, let me lift my wrist upAye yo, throw your wrist-es up, all my bitches up
These niggas is pussier than what? All them dicks is up
All my real niggas down to ride, throw your GSXRs up
I ain’t in the projects, but all my bricks is up, rrrr
You can’t be Pablo if your work ain’t sellin’
What the fuck is this bitch inhalin’?
I would’ve helped you out that pit you fell in
I am the generous Queen! Ask Ms. Ellen
Tried to drop “Another One”, you was itchin’ to scrap
You exposed your ghostwriter, now you wish it was scrapped
Heard your pussy on “Yuck, ” I guess you needed a Pap
What type of bum bitch shoot a friend over a rack?
What type of mother leave her one son over a stack?
Lil Boogie down basic bitch thinkin’ she back
Back to back, oh you mean, back to wack?
“Back to Back”? Me and Drizzy laughed at that
They say numbers don’t matter but when they discussin’ the kings
They turn around and say Lebron ain’t got 6 rings
I never signed a 360, bitch you wild dumb
That’s why Jay ain’t clear his verse for your album
Sheneneh, you a fraud committin’ perjury
I got before and after pictures of your surgery
Rah took you to her doc, but you don’t look like Rah
Left the operating table, still look like “nah”‘Cause I don’t need no, frauds
I don’t need no, drama when you call
I don’t need no, lies
Pick a side, pick a side
I took the price, and lift that bitch up
I took the ice, let me lift my wrist up
I took the price, yeah, and lift that bitch up
I took the ice, let me lift my wrist upYeah, yeah, never been no fraud
Why do niggas that are not involved love to get involved?
Why do niggas claim the streets and act just like the law?
Riddles that I cannot seem to solve, man
Cristal, come at me, Weezy F and Nick
All come and spoke about your shit in ’15
Man, I know you niggas saw this one comin’
My net worth sound like *brrrrrr*
But they don’t pay in cash
Niggas see me like, “What up, Killa?”
Man, please stop bringin’ up my past
I’d really love to leave that behind
Sometimes I ask God, “Man, why him?”
Like the team that I would never leave behind
I really gotta ease off the wine
Which is funny because I just saw Nick the other day
And she keeps getting finer over time
I just knowI don’t need no, frauds
I don’t need no, drama when you call
I don’t need no, lies
Pick a side, pick a side
I took the price, and lift that bitch up
I took the ice, let me lift my wrist up
I took the price, yeah, and lift that bitch up
I took the ice, let me lift my wrist upUh, I am not a fraud, YM, I’m the god
They don’t make ’em like me no more, man, I’m a dinosaur
Blunt be tight as biker shorts, twisted like some handlebars
Lil’ Tune out a cartoon or Avatar
I just looked in the mirror like, “All right, all right, all right”
I would let that little leaguer right there fuck my wife, word
I don’t need no fraud bitches in and out my life, word
Eatin’ out my pockets, they be in and out of sight, word
I don’t need no drama, I just need some nana
Just told my lil’ mama, “Babe, I think I love you, kinda”
Feelin’ like Tune-y Montana, Weezy, he get honored
Drake a headliner, and Nicki, she get finer, wordSource: Musixmatch

No Frauds” is a song recorded by Trinidadian-American rapper Nicki Minaj, American rapper Lil Wayne and Canadian rapper Drake. The song is a diss track, made in response to American rapper Remy Ma‘s 2017 song “Shether“, a nearly seven-minute-long diss track aimed at Minaj. Produced by Murda Beatz and Cubeatz, the song was released as a single on March 10, 2017 by Young Money EntertainmentCash Money Records and Republic Records along with “Changed It” and “Regret in Your Tears“. In the song, Minaj criticizes Ma for her prison sentence and her record sales, among other things. No Frauds” debuted and peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Critics compared the song poorly to “Shether” and criticized Drake and Lil Wayne’s appearances on the song. On April 19, the Benny Boom-directed music video for “No Frauds” was released, and showed Minaj, Drake, and Lil Wayne in various locations throughout London. The video garnered backlash due to a scene featuring Minaj on the Westminster Bridge a month after the 2017 Westminster attack.

Snob, well that has to be the ballerina girl who thinks she’s too good for the skater boy!

Sk8er Boi” (pronounced “skater boy”) is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne, released as the second single from her debut album, Let Go (2002). It was written by Lavigne and The Matrix (Scott Spock, Lauren Christy, and Graham Edwards), and produced by The Matrix. The song is a punk rockpop-punkalt-popskate punk, and power pop track, which lyrically tells a story told from the singer’s viewpoint about her rocker boyfriend and a girl he knew in high school who rejected him because he was a skateboarder and she was a snob. The music video for the song, directed by Francis Lawrence, features a concert on a city street with Lavigne singing on the hood of a car with a crowd rocking out around her. It was a success on TRL and was voted one of the best music videos of the decade by BT TV. The song has been performed in all of Lavigne’s concert tours to date.

Then last but not least , phony is Dedicated Follower of Fashion from the Kinks.

Dedicated Follower of Fashion” is a 1966 song by British band the Kinks. It lampoons the contemporary British fashion scene and mod culture in general. Originally released as a single, it has been included on many of the band’s later albums. Musically, it and “A Well Respected Man” marked the beginning of an expansion in the Kinks’ inspirations, drawing as much from British music hall traditions as from American rhythm and blues, the inspiration for breakthrough Kinks songs like “You Really Got Me“. While it was quite scornful toward them, many of the fashionistas the mocks would later take its title to heart.

In the mid-1960s fashion in Britain was becoming increasingly daring and outrageous, driven by the youth-oriented culture of Swinging LondonBoutiques such as Bibadesigners like Mary Quant, and the television personalities like Cathy McGowan who popularised them became celebrated as much as the entertainers who wore their mod clothes.

Fashion trends changed rapidly, and the Carnaby Street shops did a brisk business from those trying to avoid seeming out of step with the latest craze. Ray Davies saw all this and satirised the hypothetical extreme, a superficial dandy whose “clothes are loud but never square / It will make or break him so he’s got to buy the best … He thinks he is a flower to be looked at … In matters of the cloth he is as fickle as can be.

Happy Sunday everyone 😌💜
