Song Lyric Sunday. Opposite.

Hi everyone it’s Sunday again and time for Song Lyric Sunday. This week our host Jim Adams has aske we use opposite as our prompt.

This prompt was suggested by Maggie From Cave Walls and she said that she will be showing up “with the proverbial bells on – in contrasting colors of course!”

I have gone with the first two songs about opposite that immediately cane to mind. First the Beatles with Hello Goodbye, then Sk8ter Boi by Avril Lavigne.

Hello, Goodbye” is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney. Backed by John Lennon‘s “I Am the Walrus“, it was issued as a non-album single in November 1967, the group’s first release since the death of their manager, Brian Epstein. The single was commercially successful around the world, topping charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, Australia and several other countries. McCartney later said that the lyrics take duality as their theme. The song originated when, in response to a question from Beatles aide Alistair Taylor about songwriting, McCartney sat down at a harmonium and asked Taylor to say the opposite of whatever he said. The completed song includes a musical coda, which was improvised by the Beatles when they were recording the track in October 1967. Unimpressed with the composition, Lennon pushed for “I Am the Walrus” to be the single’s A-side, before reluctantly accepting that “Hello, Goodbye” was the more commercial-sounding of the two sides. The Beatles produced three promotional films for the song, one of which was shown on The Ed Sullivan Show in America. Due to the regulations against lip-syncing on British television, none of the clips were aired there. More information here

Sk8er Boi” (pronounced “skater boy”) is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne, released as the second single from her debut album, Let Go (2002). It was written by Lavigne and The Matrix (Scott Spock, Lauren Christy, and Graham Edwards), and produced by The Matrix. The song is a power pop and pop punk track, which lyrically tells a story told from the singer’s viewpoint about her rocker boyfriend and a girl he knew in high school who rejected him because he was a skateboarder and she was a snob. The song was well-received by critics, with most commending its hook, calling the song “funny” and “clever”. It also received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the 2003 edition. Commercially, “Sk8er Boi” was a success, reaching the top-ten in more than ten countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States (becoming Lavigne’s second top ten single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart) and sold over 1.8 million copies worldwide. According to Spin, “Sk8er Boi” has the 5th best pop-punk chorus of the 21st century. More information here

I think I remember the Lavigne song. It’s good to see the lyrics.

    Love the Beatles track ❤
And I remember trying to sing Skater Boy at a karaoke party – wow – never had to sing so fast. Made me appreciate how much energy in that track.

I adore the Beatles. No surprise. I had never heard the second track. It was so full of contrasts. Great job.

What a classic Beatles song, just hearing it transports me to another place and time. I love the Avril Lavigne song, too. What an upbeat song. You never disappoint, Willow!

I don’t care what Beatles song I hear, I like it, all of them, and this is a favorite for sure. Can’t remember hearing Skater Boi but have heard a lot of her songs and like them. This is a good one, and I like how it turned out in the end. 🙂
