This week I have gone with a group I saw at the first live gig I went to. It was at the Albert Hall London. It was my thirteenth birthday and my amazing parents had arranged for a son of one of their friends to take me to the concert. He was about eighteen and must of been irritated by having to take a 13 year-old girl to a rock concert. Mind you he had the ticket and tube fare paid for, and the headliners were the Rolling Stones, and the support group was the Yardbirds. ….woo! Now my dad worked as a body maker for London Transport ( he covered and sewed the seats for buses and tube trains). Mum was a housewife looking after six children. Money was tight. I look back and I wonder how did they afford this. I can tell you I appreciated it then, I appreciate it even more now.

The Yardbirds an English rock band, formed in London in 1963. The band’s core lineup featured vocalist and harmonica player Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty, rhythm guitarist/bassist Chris Dreja and bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith. The band is known for starting the careers of three of rock’s most famous guitarists, Eric ClaptonJimmy Page and Jeff Beck, all of whom ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 100 greatest guitarists. The band had a string of hits throughout the mid-1960s, including “For Your Love“, “Heart Full of Soul“, “Shapes of Things” and “Over Under Sideways Down“. More information here on Wikipedia

Over Under Sideways Down” is a 1966 song by. Apparently inspired by Bill Haley and His Comets’ “Rock Around the Clock”, Jeff Beck plays both the lead guitar and bass guitar. The song was released as a single in May 1966, two months before the group’s self-titled UK album (commonly known as Roger the Engineer and Over Under Sideways Down in the US and elsewhere). I really love this song not only is unique and of its age but it reminds me of the excitement and delight of being a thirteen year-old at a huge rock concert.

“Over, Under, Sideways, Down”

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Cars and girls are easy come by in this day and age,
Laughing, joking, drinking, smoking,
Till I’ve spent my wage.
When I was young people spoke of immorality,
All the things they said were wrong,
Are what I want to be.

(Hey)
Over under sideways down,
(Hey)
Backwards forwards square and round.
(Hey)
Over under sideways down,
(Hey)
Backwards forwards square and round.
When will it end, when will it end,
When will it end, when will it end.

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
I find comment ’bout my looks irrelativity,
Think I’ll go and have some fun,
‘Cos it’s all for free.
I’m not searching for a reason to enjoy myself,
Seems it’s better done,
Than argued with somebody else.

(Hey)
Over under sideways down,
(Hey)
Backwards forwards square and round.
(Hey)
Over under sideways down,
(Hey)
Backwards forwards square and round.
When will it end, when will it end,
When will it end, when will it end. Hey!Hey! Hey! Hey! Over under sideways down

The Yardbirds were a great springboard for Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page all three huge hero’s of mine.

Happy Days thank you Mum and Dad. You may be long gone but I love you still.

Female, wife, full time mother and Grandmother. I am not as happy go lucky as I used to be but I am still bubbling along on simmer! I have three handsome sons all grown and flown. The youngest married with a beautiful wife and two sons of his own. Back in 2010 I was working, running a home, driving and socializing then bang in a split second all that was gone. I had an accident at home. I broke my back, not for the first time, I had broken it 10 years previously as well. Unfortunately this time I had broken it really badly and it was truly messed up so I had to have two operations. I was told before each operation that the outcome could mean I spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. Still as some guy once wrote "I am still standing " yes "better than I ever was " I no longer use the walking stick . I had lots of friends before the accident but when things like this happen, you loose most of them. Their lives move on and mine stood still and so they left me behind ...I know that is just the way life is but it hurt and always will. Then I looked around and saw those who were still there for me, these friends are the roses in my garden they need to be tended well. They are the diamonds in the dust. I will of been married 53yrs this comming year. I have found different ways to approach life, use my pain befriend it almost...yer right , well that is what they tell me at the pain clinic ROFLMAO ...... if only I could! I have found an outlet for my fears, frustrations and night terrors . I have started writing poetry if that name can be applied to my writing. I hope I do not come over as a moaning winger. I hope I am past all that. I also hope that you might see how the poetry is moving from very dark through the grey and hopefully in to light. My back is no longer straight it is C shaped because of the injury and I have lost two and a half inches in height but my Pilates and Core teachers have helped me to stand up as straight and be as strong as possible. Pain and depression are still hanging on my arm but I have weapons to use against them and if I say so myself I cope well. I have made lots of new friends, real diamonds. I am also very grateful for all the support and help I have encountered here on Wordpress. Hugs and welcome to everyone who visits.

  1. This is lovely Willow. A really nice photo of your late Mum and Dad. I’m so sorry to hear this. Sending hugs 🤗 💜💜

    1. Thank you, they have been gone a long time now but I do still miss them . Great song though and Oh! That night at the Albert Hall, the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds plus we had a box !!

  2. I was thirteen when I first saw the Yardbirds too but it was at our local church youth club venue! Lots of memories. I look back and remember how fortunate I was to have seen Claptom, Beck and Page close up and personal before they were huge megastars. Thanks for the great memory 💕🙂

    1. Hey great memories, was this in the west London area, were those good days 🌈 I remember seeing Jeff Beck in Greenfield too , yup those were the days 💜

      1. No it was in Stratford at St. Francis Youth Club in the East End. So many bands emerging at that time in the 60s. My first real ‘concert’ was the Beatles. My older sister took me to see them in East Ham at the Gaumont. I found photos from it online.

      2. Oh my gosh … Yes! I even saw the Beatles several years later in Stratford when they filmed Penny Lane. You can find that too on the Internet. Exciting times for a teenager in London in the 60s!!

  3. Heard of The Yardbirds but I never heard of this song before. It’s a nice choice. Very upbeat!
