Oviellejo #4

US Mass Shootings, 1982-2019: Data From Mother Jones’ Investigation

oh what a tangled mess we’ve weaved
now a nation grieves

we offer prayers, while asking why
to an empty sky

raining terror down on our heads
as we count the dead

we’ll blame some other foe instead
of looking at our own dark hearts
admitting that we played a part
now a nation grieves to an empty sky as we count the dead

The Oviellejo is an Old Spanish verse form (derived from ovillo, a ball of yarn). A stanza consists of 10 lines, with a rhyme scheme of AABBCCCDDC. The second line of each rhyme scheme, Line 2,4,6, is short line of up to 5 syllables. The last line is a “redondilla,” a “little round” that collects all three of the short lines.

Enough Is Enough!

Heaven Help us all.

charles french words reading and writing

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Edmund Burke

How many mass shootings will occur before we do something about it? Once again, a horrible shooting took place today in El Paso, Texas. The numbers that I have seen on television reporting are at least 19 dead and over 40 wounded. Once again, this horror occurs in America. Once again, we can expect those politicians who are in the control of the NRA to offer “thoughts and prayers.” Once again, we, as a nation, need to demand action.

Once again, we need to say in one voice, “Enough is enough!”

This is a uniquely American tragedy, not that it cannot happen in other countries, but the sheer numbers of incidents that do occur here make it part of the fabric of our nation.

We must not allow this to be normal…

Song Lyric Sunday. 3/9/2019.

It’s Sunday again and time for Song Lyric Sunday. I missed out last week due to being unwell but here I am back like the preverbial bad penny not totally fit but on the right road.

Well this week it’s T.V. music and Jim Adams said: “This week you can write about either the TV show or the song, or both. Everyone should be able to find a song that is featured in a TV show and works with this prompt. Try to find a song that fits the prompt, then write your post.”

I have chosen the theme to The Bridge an absolutely brilliant Scandinavian darker than dark drama. The theme is an absolute perfect match to the story. I fell in love with the theme after 60 secs of hearing.

The theme is by Choir of Young Believers is the musical project of singer, writer and guitarist Jannis Noya Makrigiannis from Copenhagen, Denmark. The band, which consists of Makrigiannis along with a rotating cast of supporting players, has had multiple No 1 hits in their home country of Denmark and was named the “Best New Act” at the 2009 Danish Music Awards. COYB’s music combines folk melodies, orchestral instrumentation, and dark lyrics. More Information here.

The theme is called Hollow Talk.

The series The Bridge is one of most compelling I have ever watched. It is set around an Autistic policewoman, a detective, who has some very strange character traits and comes from a difficult family background.

It is written by Hans Rosenfeldt. A joint creative and financed production between Sweden’s Sveriges Television and Denmark’s Danmarks Radio, it has been shown in more than 100 countries.

The first series begins with the discovery of a dead body exactly on the centre of theØresund Bridge, which links Malmö with Copenhagen, necessitating a joint investigation. Sofia Helin, as the Swedish police detective Saga Norén, stars in all four series. In the first and second, her Danish counterpart, Martin Rohde, is played by Kim Bodnia, and in the third and fourth Thure Lindhardt plays Henrik Sabroe. The first series was broadcast on the Swedish SVT1 and Danish DR1 during the autumn of 2011, and on the United Kingdom’s BBC Four the following spring. More information here.

There are four seasons each as good as the first. I can really recommend it to anyone. You soon get used to reading the subtitles.

Here is a little clip to wet your appetite.
