This week this Hugh has asked us to come up with a favourite song and video that surprised me. I can think of quiet a few that have shocked me but I am not sure I have been surprised .
This video shocked , surprised and thrilled me so much. I was knocked sideways to discover that this song I had loved for ages was sung by a man. A gorgeous looking guy with the most fabulous voice . I think it will surprise you too.
The Singer is Thomas Otten singing Espiritu. He is a French Countertenor.
Thanks to Hugh at Hughs views and news and also thanks to Erika Kind for the inspiration for this feature.
Have a Happy and Surprising weekend everyone !

I agree. If you didn’t know the first name of the singer or watched the video, you’d definitely think it was a woman singing. Nonetheless, a beautiful song, Willow.

Back a few hundred years back women were not allowed to perform on stage. Men played and sang all parts, even the female ones. That’s why such female voices were “created”. At that time they did “surgeries” to achieve it (I think you got me… hehe). But today such voices are natural which is amazing. Unfortunately, I don’t remember how those men voices were called.
Great song btw. thank you for sharing, Willowπ

Hi Erika they were called Castrati because to get that voice the were castrated . I think last real castrati died in the 1800s. Thomas Otten voice is a Countertenor and he really didn’t realize what a gem it was until he was well past puberty. You can read about castrati here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castrato

Oh, yes, right… actually obvious… hehe. Now I know the English expressions too. Due to my own classical vocal training I am a bit familiar with those voices too although (unfortunately) I never sang together with one.
Listen to this one:

Oh! I love this one I am really getting in to these high voices πΉπ. Do you still sing , what type of voice do you have. My Daughter in Law is a mezzo soprano but since she has had the children she no longer sings opera. πΉπΉ

I like those high voices as long as they are soft and warm and not too shrill. Yes, I still do. I am a mezzo soprano too but with a wide range, also alto is no problem down into deep areasβ¦lol.
Yes, children change a lot but I never stopped it. That was what I could always do next to the kids. Next to my opera voice I developed more of a βPopβ voice. I recorded my own songs. On my page My Songs https://erikakind.me/songs/ you can check out both if you are interested. π

I certainly will , I looked for Katy’s page from her singing days but it’s no longer there on the net. ππ
