I punched in Blue and white spotted moth on goggle and WIKI came back with a giant leopard moth. Is this it

Jun 20, 2018 @ 19:55:31
Woohoo you win, thank you ๐ you win this days prize, my undying gratitude ๐
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:04:31
You’e welcome. I have a couple of very good nature books, but this little chap wasn’t in either, hence googling. He is rather magnificent. Where did you see him?
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:20:36
I was walking Ruby to the field when I saw a young woman photographing it on an old tree stump. She had found it on the pavement and moved it to the stump for safety. If you read Gordon Lepard’s answer it’s pupa feeds on dead wood. ๐๐
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:36:57
Ah……… good the lady put it on a tree stump then. We have some beautiful things here in the UK.
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:38:35
Yes we do and we need to protect them ๐๐
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:45:35
We feel the same about bees, birds, badgers, and hedgehogs.
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:49:56
I agree and some of our birds too, but definitely our bees!! ๐
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:43:50
Thanks Willow. I’ve just asked him if he can identify a hitch hiker we had on the boat.
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:51:20
Has he told you yet?๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ It’s Nature night tonight ๐
Jun 20, 2018 @ 22:52:27
Not yet.
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:53:59
I have every faith he or Geoff will know!
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:56:22
Hopefully.
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:02:41
its a Leopard moth (that’s Geoff & My surname with an extra o). Its unusual in that its larva (caterpillar) feeds inside decaying trees on the rotting wood.
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:17:21
It was found on the ground near a dead tree stump. A young lady had picked picked it and put it on the stump. It was still there the next day but had burrowed down . I thought you or Geoff might come up with the answer but so did Pensitivity 101 ๐ thank you ๐
Jun 20, 2018 @ 22:43:10
Hi there. Sneaking in a bit, wonder if you can help with this one please.
https://pensitivity101.wordpress.com/2015/08/23/and-this-is-the-moth-of-august/
I never did find out what it was.
Jun 20, 2018 @ 20:53:11
Well well it is huge! Isn’t it amazing too !
Jun 20, 2018 @ 23:57:28
Cool looking! ๐ค
Jun 21, 2018 @ 05:09:34
It was so beautiful to see close up.๐น๐น๐
Jun 21, 2018 @ 03:40:33
so pretty. and glad to know the name. your post sparked my interest to see if they are in the US too, as I think I’ve seen one. They are here too! Not where I live now, in the desert, but definitely where I moved from, the southeast. I had no idea that their wingspan is around 3 inches. wow.
I took a photo of a moth a few years ago that was a pale yellow with pink markings. very pretty. I wonder what it was. Now I really want to know.
Do you have Luna moths? I’ve always loved them. They were magical when I was a child.
I may not be able to get over here often, but when I do I love spending time with you. ๐
Jun 21, 2018 @ 05:03:28
Well thank you Wendy you are always welcome here. The Leopard moth is amazing I felt honoured to see it! The Luna moth is a native north America and apparently it has no mouth so only lives a week. Amazing one was found on a door step in Oakhampton , Devon in 2008 how did it travel to England over 4000 miles? ๐๐
Jun 22, 2018 @ 14:00:43
Wow!! Amazing! The larva must have stowed away in someone’s luggage. He wanted an adventure. ๐
Jun 22, 2018 @ 14:19:09
Yes he must of , fancy being so beautiful but not having a mouth ? ๐
Jun 21, 2018 @ 03:45:04
I think my moth might have been Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda). Cool.
Jun 21, 2018 @ 05:08:41
Oh! I just looked up the Rosey Maple Moth it is so beautiful, there are such wonderful creatures in this world we must look after them ๐น
Jun 22, 2018 @ 15:59:07
Yes, I agree!! ๐ฆ
Jun 21, 2018 @ 19:19:07
Gorgeous moth! Look like it might have just emerged!
Jun 21, 2018 @ 19:20:52
It is truly amazing isn’t it ๐
Jun 22, 2018 @ 07:04:37

Jun 22, 2018 @ 08:30:48
