A true tale of a tail.

Or lovely Ruby a Labrador ( Guide dog retired ) has been living with us for over two years now. She is settled and seems happy and is slowly learning how to enjoy her retirement.

Our Ruby is different to other Labradors, not only because of her training, she has a short tail. 6 inches shorter than normal!

Here is the tale of how this came about.

Hubby had walked Ruby since she arrived to live with the blind lady who we know and help.

We had a call from the blind lady one day, could Hubby help her partner out with some carpentry. Now you need to know the partner was also blind. He was putting some shelves in to a cupboard. Yes I did say he was blind, totally bind. He was using power tools too!

There was a particularly difficult angle and that he could not manage. So Hubby drove over to see if could assist. The sawing was being done in the garden so Hubby went through to the garden. Ruby, loving Hubby and associating him with fun and walks followed him out.

Hubby did manage to cut the angle and Howl ( not his real name) was pleased with it. Howl was a very good carpenter and hard to please . When Hubby went back in the blind lady Viv, ( not her real name) asked hubby to check out some damp in her bedroom.

Ruby followed hubby everywhere. After a few minutes he noticed red marks appearing on the walls and paintwork. It was like a horror movie.

Finally it dawned on Hubby it must be Ruby’s blood. Checking her over.. being the only sighted person, he discovered tip of her tail was indeed cut. He must of caught the tip of her tail with the saw.

Well after numerous trips to the vets and being sent away twice to the Guide Dogs Vetenary Hospital for long stays. Ruby had her tail operated on twice, and now as I said her tail is 6 inches shorter than most Labradors.

Unlike us humans dogs don’t make a fuss about illness, operations or even amputations, even partial ones.

So that is the shortened version of the True Tale of Tail!
