The Tunnel

There it was again that faint mermering coming from the cave. He moved closer to the entrance spread his arms across the opening and listened.

He was sure he could hear voices. Standing with the noonday sun behind him shilouetting his form he looked very tall.

No way was he going to enter the tunnel, he was no fool. He knew it was all too easy to get lost in these caves. So he stayed outside in the sun and listened. Way down at the end of the tunnel she watched him, not sure if what she saw was real or not. The bright light seemed to confuse her.

Suddenly she was disturbed by the sense of someone standing behind her. “What are you doing” snapped an irritated voice, ” we are late my watch has stopped again” She ignored the voice watching, intently the figure at the end of the tunnel.

“Come on ” the voice announced. As the tick tock got on her nerves. “Alright!” Hissed Alice as she span around. Coming face to face with a giant white rabbit dressed in a morning suit. “What is the hurry” she enquired.  “Well the Mad Hatter has invited us for tea and the Queen is dropping in too and I hear there will be jam tarts”

“Do you think he could come” asked Alice nodding towards the entrance. “Don’t be daft” replied the 10ft rabbit, “he is just a figment of your imagination, not real at all.”

“Right” said Alice and they clip clopped and flip flopped deeper into the tunnel.

Back out in the sunshine Mark finally decided he had imagined  the voices and went back to join his friends who were having a picnic by the croquet lawn.

Nicely done — Alice down the rabbit hole on her way to tea, Mark on his way to play croquet — are they using flamingos as mallets at his picnic?
