Song Lyric Sunday. The Sun

In 1964  the  Beatles  released  “I’ll follow  the  Sun” I was  then  11 years  old ingand  even  though  I  was a huge  Rolling Stones   fan  this  song stuck a  cord in  my  heart  and  always  will. On  my  darkest  days  you  can  often  find  me  sing  this  song!

THE BEATLES LYRICS

“I’ll Follow The Sun”

One day you’ll look to see I’ve gone
For tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun
Some day you’ll know I was the one
But tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun

And now the time has come
And so my love I must go
And though I lose a friend
In the end you will know, oooh

One day you’ll find that I have gone
But tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun

Yea, tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun
And now the time has come
And so my love I must go
And though I lose a friend
In the end you’ll know, oooh

One day you’ll find that I have gone
But tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun

Lyrics  from  A to  Z  Lyrics

In 1967 I  was  14years  old, I  was  going to  Top of  the Pop  when I  could, parents  and Homework permitting. I had  met  my  husband   and  and  in  three  more  years  I  would  be married, give  me  another  two years  and I  would  be  having  my  first son.

So  Traffic  and  Paper  Sun  always  makes  me  think of  sunny  day  that  were full of  fun…. well that is  what  the  music  brings  to  mind  ,  the  reality  was  nothing of  the  sort.

The  video  is  very odd  and has  nothing  to  do  with  the  song? But it is  interesting in  a  weird  way  and  it  shows  the  group  together  which is  rare  as  they  split  up  due  to  artistic  differences.

The  weather  here is  wet  damp  and  nasty, we had  a  bout of freezing  fog  and  frosty  ground , which  was better  than  the  horrible  weather  we have  now. I  am dreaming of  the  sun  and  feeling  better.

TRAFFIC LYRICS

“Paper Sun”

So you think your having good times
With the boy that you just met
Kicking sand from beach to beach
Your clothes all soaking wet
But if you look around and see
A shadow on the run
Don’t be too upset because its just a paper sun

Ahh Paper Sun, Ahh Paper Sun

In the room where you’ve been sleeping
All your clothes all thrown about
Cigarettes burn window sills
Your meter’s all run out
But then again its nothing
You just split when day is done
Pitching lips to nowhere, hung up on the paper sun

Standing in the cool of my room
Fresh cut flowers give me sweet perfume
Too much sun will burn!

When you’re feeling tired and lonely
You see people going home
You can’t make the train fare
Or the six pence for the phone
And icicles your crying
From your cheek have just begun
Dont be sad, good times are had
Beneath the paper sun

Daylight breaks while you sleep on the sand
A seagull is stealing the ring from your hand
The boy who had given you so much fun
Has left you so cold in the paper sun

I love ELO and the Beatles too! I didn’t know the other one by Traffic. 🙂

A blog friend introduced me to Mr. Blue Sky a couple years ago – he plays it for his daughters all the time. I love that. My dad is a huge Beatles fan and played those for me growing up so love that choice. I hadn’t heard your second pick – but love the story behind what it meant for you. My dad had mixes he’d done of Top of the Pops in the 60s from the radio in the UK – I found and listened to them in high school. This one reminded me of those.

Is it just me or have the songs these days lost the concept of having meaningful lyrics? I mean back in the old days the lyrics were as important as the melody. That seems to have shifted drastically. Do you agree?

Great choices – I’ve always liked Mr Blue Sky but never knew who it was by. I may have to listen to more ELO now!
