Song Lyric Sunday:Let the music speak.

This is  part of  Helen Espinosa’s Song Lyric Sunday. Helen like  many of  us  has been unsettled  by  this  weeks  events in her  country’s  politics   has  said   : “So, our Song Lyric Sunday theme for this week is not really a theme at all.  Just express yourself through music… let’s let music speak for us and through us this week.”

As  we are  to  express ourselves  through  music  I  shall say  no  more  and  let  the  music   speak  for me!

THE VERVE LYRICS

“Bittersweet Symphony”  written  by  Richard Ashcroft  , music  by  Kieth Richards  and  Mick Jagger.

‘Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
You’re a slave to money then you die
I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah,

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I’m here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I’m a million different people
from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Well I never pray
But tonight I’m on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airways are clean and there’s nobody singing to me now

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I’m here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I’m a million different people
from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
I can’t change
I can’t change

‘Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
Try to find some money then you die
I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the things meet yeah

You know I can change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I’m here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I’m a million different people
from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

I can’t change my mold
no, no, no, no, no,
I can’t change
Can’t change my body,
no, no, no

I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down
I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down
Been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Have you ever been down?
Have you’ve ever been down?

“Hymn Of The Big Wheel”

[Horace Andy]

The big wheel keeps on turning
On a simple line day by day
The earth spins on its axis
One man struggle while another relaxes

There’s a hole in my soul like a cavity
Seems like the world is out to gather just by gravity
The wheel keeps turning the sky’s rearranging
Look my son the weather is changing

I’d like to feel that you could be free
Look up at the blue skies beneath a new tree
Sometime again
You’ll turn green and the sea turns red
My son I said the power of axis over my head
The big wheel keeps on turning
On a simple line day by day
The earth spins on its axis
One man struggle while another relaxes

We sang about the sun and danced among the trees
And we listened to the whisper of the city on the breeze
Will you cry in the most in a lead-free zone
Down within the shadows where the factories drone
On the surface of the wheel they build another town
And so the green come tumbling down
Yes close your eyes and hold me tight
And i’ll show you sunset sometime again

The big wheel keeps on turning
On a simple line day by day
The earth spins on its axis
One man struggle while another relaxes
As a child’s silent prayer my hope hides in disguise
While satellites and cameras watch from the skies
An acid drop of rain recycled from the sea
It washed away my shadow burnt a hole in me
And all the king’s men cannot put it back again
But the ghetto sun will nurture life
And mend my soul sometime again

The big wheel keeps on turning
On a simple line day by day
The earth spins on its axis
One man struggle while another relaxes

This year has been Bitter sweet. The artists passed Bowie and Cohen stand out, but we lived during their time and their legacy is there, still to influence inspire and motivate. A referendum where the people chose ,so many thought it should never have been the result, talk of misery and mayhem because of it. But democracy is alowing the people to choose, listening and carrying out that choice regardless. The mayhem didn’t come and life goes on and just maybe the people will have been right… as everything happens for a reason… doesn’t it? As forthe most horrific chauvinistic human running for office , the slurrs the bigotry and diatribe that poured from him. The people spoke. May be just maybe the business man will shut his mouth and pull the strings overseen by the team around him. Just a smidgeon of a chance that A business mogul will fill the coffers and put the internal America in the black by balancing the books feeding the poor. Bitter sweet is a good song for this peculiarly odd year. 😇

Yes it has been a bad year, bitter sweet! As you say we have lost artists musicians and writers. The world is being torn apart by wars, refugees from war, repression and economics stream to the west, we are drowning.
Brexit has honestly ripped family and friends apart. I have felt the backlash personally. I truly believe the dreadful prophecies will not come to pass and if they do… Well I think they may have anyway! Certainly not worth having a civil war about.
As for American God Bless her, the future is an open book all we can do is wait and keep our fingers crossed.
That leads on to my second song Hymn to the big wheel (The Earth ) keeps on turning. Be well and be happy the sun and the moon are still rising and setting. Thank you so much for reading. xxx

As much as both of these songs sort of speak to the bittersweet, I think they both still hold hope. Life continues, and as long as it does, we have the ability to make changes. It doesn’t really take away the fear, but both songs made me pause and think. Thanks so much, Willow. ❤

OH! so do I , all the Manchester boys used to walk like … and my middle son. A huge Verve and Oasis fan.. yes it was possible to like both if you kept it quiet!🙂 I remember the middle son tell me he was going to Manchester to see Richard Ashcroft in an unguarded moment I asked ..” did you go to school with him love”… “No Mum he is lead singer of the Verve! “….. Ouch!!
