Press the Button: Part 3

“Press your  jet pack  ignition  button”,  said  a  loud  voice in  my  helmet. I jumped  as  did  my  friends  too. It woke us  all  from  our  reverie while  suspended  in  space. For  the  first  time  ever  separated  and  cut  off  from  all  we  held  dear.

All  we had  ever  known  was  Earth  our planet, but  we  did  not  see  a planet  when  we  had  all looked  back  to where  we  had  come  from. We had  all obeyed  the  order  to  press the  ignition  on  our  jet  packs  and  we were  now  proceeding  along the  guide line in  to  the  future. Somehow  as  one  we  were  looking back  at  what  we  had  always  thought  was our  world, our  Earth. It  was  not  a planet  it  was  a huge  metal thing.

How  could  this  be, before  we  had  entered  the  strange  building . what  was it, really  only  half  an  hour ago. We had  been  running  across  green  fields  along  a  river  under blue skies. Yet here  we  were  in space, it  was  real , it  was  scary. We  were in  spacesuits and  jet packs moving along  a  guide  rope  at  speed.

The place  from  were  we had  come  was  getting  smaller  and  smaller as it slipped  away  from us into  the  distance. Suddenly  I felt afraid, panicky even. I felt as if  I  was  going  to cry. Being  last  in  line  I  had  the  clearest  view  of  our  home  receding in to  the  distance. Just  when I felt  I  could  contain  my  tears  anymore  I heard James  shout “Look” ….. we all did.
