Press the Button: Part 3

“Press your  jet pack  ignition  button”,  said  a  loud  voice in  my  helmet. I jumped  as  did  my  friends  too. It woke us  all  from  our  reverie while  suspended  in  space. For  the  first  time  ever  separated  and  cut  off  from  all  we  held  dear.

All  we had  ever  known  was  Earth  our planet, but  we  did  not  see  a planet  when  we  had  all looked  back  to where  we  had  come  from. We had  all obeyed  the  order  to  press the  ignition  on  our  jet  packs  and  we were  now  proceeding  along the  guide line in  to  the  future. Somehow  as  one  we  were  looking back  at  what  we  had  always  thought  was our  world, our  Earth. It  was  not  a planet  it  was  a huge  metal thing.

How  could  this  be, before  we  had  entered  the  strange  building . what  was it, really  only  half  an  hour ago. We had  been  running  across  green  fields  along  a  river  under blue skies. Yet here  we  were  in space, it  was  real , it  was  scary. We  were in  spacesuits and  jet packs moving along  a  guide  rope  at  speed.

The place  from  were  we had  come  was  getting  smaller  and  smaller as it slipped  away  from us into  the  distance. Suddenly  I felt afraid, panicky even. I felt as if  I  was  going  to cry. Being  last  in  line  I  had  the  clearest  view  of  our  home  receding in to  the  distance. Just  when I felt  I  could  contain  my  tears  anymore  I heard James  shout “Look” ….. we all did.

All hopes dashed and broke
Our eyes held high to the flag.
Our troops lost, fallen

Press the button

So  taking a  deep  breath  I pressed  the  button. There was a sudden swish behind us as  a partition   dropped  down all around us  encasing us in an airlock in front of  the  door marked, no.

We all were a little  scared  and  excited  as  we watched  the  meter  registering the atmosphere  being  sucked out  of  the airlock  and  then  the  door  opened  slowly  to reveal the  vast darkness of  space lit  with  a million  stars  and at least  two huge planets.

Standing in silence  transfixed  by  the  view  we were  rooted  to  the spot. Then  we  noticed  the  guide  line  stretching out in front of  us.  Inviting us  to  move forward, out towards  the inky  back  sparkling horizon. Hesitantly  we clipped ourselves  on to  the  guide line  and  slowly  floated out in to the  vacuum.

The  very first  thing  that  we  noticed  was  the  silence, it was deafening! I  said  the  alarms  had  been deafening  when we hit  the first  button  well it  was nothing  compared  to  this  silence. I turned my  head  just in time to  to  see  the  door  we had  left  by  was closed. For  the  second time  today I  knew  the only  way  was  forward .

There we were  the  four of us for  the first  time in our  lives  outside  that  which  we knew  as home  our whole  world.Suddenly  I  felt  alone  and  scared,  two  feelings I  had  never  experienced  before. Looking at  the  eyes of  the others  though  their  visors I could  see they  felt  the  very  same.

Song Lyric Sunday – Now We Are Free: by Hans Zimmer and Liza Gerrard

Helen Espinosa  of

THIS THING CALLED LIFE ONE WORD AT A TIME

suggestion for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday is to pick a song that you love from a movie.  I hope that gives you lots of options, but as always, you are welcome to do your own thing and just share music.

So  as  it  is  movie  theme’s this  week  I  thought  okay  I  do not  need  to  have  loved  the  film  just  the  theme. Well  though it is  a  good  film  Gladiator  did not  ring  all  my  bells  but  the  end  theme  really  is  so  beautiful. Now  some of  the  words  are  Hebrew but  most  of  them  are  sounds  , there is  also  a English  translation  but  that  does  not  make  much  sense  either. Yet  taken  as a  whole  the  effect is  magical. The theme  was  written  by  Hans  Zimmer   and  Liza  Gerrard .

I hope  you  enjoy  as  much  as I  do .

Stream of Consciousness Saturday : Press

Press the button and let’s see what happens. It all started out so simply, no pressure, just the four of us messing around.
Well, after we depressed the button all hell let loose. There were lights and alarm bells ringing. It was scary and honestly deafening!
The huge metal door flew open at an alarming speed. What was there for us to do but enter. At first it was dark but we could see lights ahead. We made our way slowly towards the light, then the door slammed shut with a resounding bang behind us . Mercifully  there  was  silence
I remember thinking well there is no return we must just go forward. So  we pressed on.

Eventually  we  reached  a  portal  with two exits . One marked  yes and  one  marked  no . We stood there in  the middle of  nowhere wondering  which way  to  go. There  felt like  there was no  way  back  with  the  door locked  and  there  was a  force- field in front  of us. It had to be one of  the exits here either side of us. We looked  at  the yes  door  and  there  was  nothing  there to help us  make a decision  so  we looked  at  the  no door . Hanging  by  the  the  no  door  there  were  four  pressure suits , boots  and  helmets. There  was a red  cupboard  with a  note on the  door  saying  “Don’t  forget  your  jet packs   and oxygen.

Well I ask  you,  the four of us  all reached  for  the  suits. Once  suited  booted and  helmeted  we  helped  each other  with  the  oxygen and  the jet packs. We were  ready, what a day  this  was turning  out to be!

We all moved to  the  door and  red  the instructions  : Big red  letters said press.

This  is  part of  Linda G Hill’s   Stream of  Consciousness  Saturday.

The Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “Press.” Find a word that starts with press-, ends with -press, or use “press” as a word all by itself. Have fun!

Exaspiration

Slapped down , guilty without a trial
Not one good deed gone unpunished
Shouted at made to feel vile
Accused of betrayal
Shut out and banished
I sadly fail
To explain
How I
Feel.

Zip it up

Zip it shut sew it up tight
Stop the babble of words
Nothing of use, nothing right
An outpouring of wingless birds.

Get me a plate I shall eat them all
Please let me take them back
Every last one chokes, big and small.
I will swallow them all, I will retract.

I never wanted to cause any pain
Believe me I meant no harm
Words I had heard again and again.
Lost now in this storm with no calm.

Words are weapons that wound and kill
My ears burn from what has been said
My throat torn out, now my voice is still.
Words lie bleeding words lie dead.

It is all too late there is no way back
Too many silences too much pain
One word needed but of it there a lack
Sorry, sorry this is insane.

Zip it shut sew it up tight
Stop the babble of words
Nothing of use, nothing right
A sad outpouring of wingless birds!
