Ageing leaves fall to the ground
Ushering in the end of summer days
Tumbling twirling , furling all around
Under heaving boughs of harvest golden light plays
Myriads of scurrying animals gather winter stores
Night draws in and morning is dressed in foggy silver hoar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As smoke from a thousand bonfires rise
Unwinding dads rid the evening train homewards
Turning their eyes to the dying light thought of stake pie and fries
Uniformed school children collect harvest rewards
Muffled sounds of muted car tyres
Nipping cold , pinched cheeks as summer expires.
Willow, the word ‘uniformed’ really got me!
Great sense of Autumn throughout.
Sep 24, 2014 @ 08:50:55
Did it remind you of school and nuns or was it something else. I used to hate the winter uniform.
Sep 24, 2014 @ 10:53:35
It reminded me of the actual uniform which was a big heavy box-pleated grey ‘thing’. We had to wear a check red and white blouse under it and a wine cardigan. The dressmaker who made my uniform decided to give us value so she added a big lump of extra material within the waist which could be let down as I grew. I didn’t really ever grow any taller from when I was eleven so the lump remained for 5 years!!!
I am not surprised ours was a gymslip with white blouse and school tie, blazer, dark Navy felt closh style hat and brown knee length socks. When we reached the dizzy height’s of third form seniors we wore Aline skirt still long brown socks the sixth form allowed stockings or tights. Don’t start me on the summer uniform… Oh! nearly forgot sensible brown shoes or sandles
