The Stand

Alone I stood.  Lost, deserted railing at the moon.

Angry  was I, and abandoned too soon.

Fled, they had all left me to my fate

My preparations barely finished  all my hopes blown away like loss of faith.

Unready, unprepared I felt my pride and strength begin to drain.

It was not so much what I had to face  but, their betrayal that caused the pain.

My body twitching my bladder suddenly emptied. Was I this, wretched weak

Could I  not hold my pride whatever the future was, no matter how bleak.

As the last lights of their lanterns disappeared from sight

I was engulfed  by dark and the unholy spirits of the night!

They curled around  my feet and drank the water I had passed.

The ran their tongues and claws up my spine. I did not know if I could last.

Suddenly with no warning there they were, blood for drool and fire in their fur.

They stretched and then they caught my scent,  piss and fear heavy on the air.

There was nothing for it, what else could I do.

Those bastard cowards left me here and I would damn well see it through.

I took a breath and faced them ignoring the demons on my back.

I raised my sword and screaming I threw myself into the attack!
